A lot of crap from china directly funds the pla. Their military(a direct branch of the communist party) owns interests in many firms.

I endeavor to avoid stuff from China where possible, even if it costs more.

Around here we’d call it ethnic Lightning. Where ethnic = ethnicity of whoever owned the structure.

Lot of polish and Italian lightning in these parts ;)

If no clicking, possibly a hub bearing? Again the side under load will quiet down...turn right, left side is under load & vice versa

My grandmother, from Kansas City, used that term for the counter beside the Kitchen sink. So, I didn't have any problems understanding that..

    Thanks Pete - much appreciated.

Amazon has highly rated/reviewed dual sets of both CV axles & Hub bearing assemblies for about the same $$$ as (1) of each locally discounted: you know what they say: "in for a penny, in for a pound.." Sigh.

I'm going to give the shop owner a call that kindly helped us w/ the vehicle last week, and ask to bring the car in for an estimate / see if he'd be willing to install "owner-supplied" parts, today.

re: clicking & howling - Yes, it is definitely clicking.. and howling like a wolf @ full Moon. Since the wheel hub has to come off to remove the CV axle - I'll see what replacing the hub assembly will cost, as part of the service.

Thanks again for the feedback Pete, much appreciated.

Another easy thing to look for if your havnt already-has one of them split the boot and lost its grease? If yes, that is likely the culprit and you may not have to replace both.

My guess is its the left but CV shafts are a pain to diagnose... My personal preference is to change them both. They are the same age and you will end up doing them anyways so that's what I do on vehicles now. I treat them like brakes if you do one side do one do them both. The shaft is transferring the torque from the transmission evenly on both sides at speed so if you have one new cv shaft and one worn out shaft it will make the worn one go bad pretty fast and you will be doing that one in a few months anyways.

It usually ends up being the outside wheel in a turn... The best way to tell is to drive in a tight circle and see if the wheel angle makes it louder if it does than its an outter cv joint. If it doesnt make it louder its the inner cv joint.

Put your car into gear or have somebody else do it and listen for the clunk with your head by each side and see which is louder and thats probably the one.

If you can only change one get under it and see which boot is torn and most likely that's a good one to start with because all the grease will be gone and dirt will have worked its way inside the boot. CV shafts usually wont go bad unless the boot is torn in my experience. Almost every one I have done has had a torn boot and all the fancy shaft grease they put in it leaks out. I cant remember what that grease is called but it is specific to CV shafts.

Another trick I have used is to get the front in the air and turn them the wheels by hand while trying to hold the shaft in place. The one that moves more is the worse of the two shafts. If you get more than 1/8 inch play its bad..

Back when I was flipping / fixing vehicles for income CV shafts, brakes, exhaust and heater cores where one of the most common problems and reasons why people sold their cars. I would buy a 6 year old car dirt cheap and find that all it needed was a brake job and cv shafts or a heater core flush. It baffles me how little car knowledge some people have! They buy a $19,000+ car and as soon as it needs a brake job sell it. :hair::hair:

At this point in life, if it were me Dan's issue would be going to my trusted mechanic. Most issues requiring squirming under a vehicle on jack-stands are years behind me now.

Those would go a long way for sure!!

Saturday, my neighbor was showing me a used lift he bought for his garage that was still in pieces on the tailor. Its going back because its missing a small piece-the top cross member that stabilizes the unit :picard:

Guy he bought it from had said it was in good working condition. Maybe, as long as you dont want to get under the car and trust it wont fall on your head

That's what I was thinking, Aint changed one in years. But usually if the noise is a growl or grumble its likely the hub bearing.

No, it's cool .. - Thank You - very much for that post & the great info. there Pete & G, much appreciated.

I can't do the repair at this point, the leaves on the Shade Tree have long gone, and it's too freaking cold outside anyways - I'd never get bolts up to temp. / above freezing, bolt heads would be snapping off in no time.. Not to mention the jack stands / safety factor.

This vehicle was purchased for Natalie / supposed to be her ride, but it's been going on a 3 month process just to rehab it to the point of sneaking a Sticker on it, and getting more expensive by the week. Given the fact the bottom rockers are in so poor shape she would never be able to get an emergency jack on them / change a tire on it - this means I'll be driving it, and I really have absolutely no vested desire or interest to do so, other than to try to recover some $$$ before the next Inspection due in July 2018 - I'll let the trusted mechanic evaluate, get an estimate, and make the call on how to proceed.

I've been working on finishing the rehab for the '96 Camry purchased as a "plan B" / pellet hauler vehicle - and finished tracing a wiring issue w/ the power door locks & windows to the wiring harness in the Driver's door, where the wiring routes <-> in the rubber flex boot between the door & body frame, (5) wires were cut right at the apex point where the harness flexes. Not an 'uncommon' issue, from what I've read on toyotanation.com / the Camry forums.

I'm going to put on some cold weather gear and get this repair done PDQ today, I have a feeling we're gonna need this vehicle real soon now. Time to find the soldering Iron - shouldn't have 'cleaned' the workshop, Sigh. :picard:

Thanks again to all for the tips & feedback, much appreciated - time to get busy here.

    See Ya later,
    Rob

Easy to spot.....Look for grease all over the inner side of the tire/wheel assembly.

Makes sense to do both at the same time. Most shops will do the job for just labor $$........explain that it's a "second car" that you don't want to sink a ton of $$ into if you can help it.

    Keep us updated.
