My grand nephew wants my old jeep. He asks every year he comes down here, if he can buy it. I'm finally ready to part with it. So... he gets first right of refusal. It's been sitting for 8 years, it needs some work but not a lot (all things considered) It needs a new turn signal indicator (old Spartan unit) It needs the motor gone through, it hasn't turned over in a long time (ran fine when parked) It has some quarter panel rust, but most everything else is solid. It needs new tires. The tires are too sun checked to tow, I don't trust them not to blow out. It needs a roll cage, a real one, not a body mount roll bar. It needs a new soft top. And a bunch of small stuff, stuff I never find time to do. So it should go to a good home. Here's the kicker,....it's not really stock. And an odd ball of sorts. I won't go into detail as that would take a while, so I'll ball-park the mods. D-44's, frt. & rr., Pwr. str. conversion., SOA swap that really works well, on/off road. frt. shackle reversal, V-8 rad., etc. And, it's a 1973 CJ-6. 104-7/8" WB. Oddball part, this one has a 258cid., not the 232cid. Even has the stickers showing that. Shouldn't be, but it is. So how do I even try to price this thing for my nephew?? Pictures may be forth coming if I get lucky. Thanks.
Such a sweet rig. If you can get it running, $ 2500- $5000+ to the right buyer imo. Nephew price: $ free to $1500
I'd say $1000 to 1500 is about right for a nephew... Good lookin' base rig for offroading... ... I bought a non running 1976 CJ-7 from an Uncle for $500 and put in too much ... But had a whole lotta of fun with it...
Jeeps are like boats both of them cost a lot of money to keep running and your never happy with how they run/perform. The way I look at a project like this is what's it cost to get it back to good running shape vs what one in running shape cost. I see $3,000-5,000 in repairs for engine, tires and roll cage. Around here 5-7k will likely buy much newer well maintained upgraded jeep that the owner has 2x that in parts! But with yours there is the family connection and satisfaction of doing it yourself and knowing what's been done and how to fix it yourself. I just bought an 05 Cummings 2500 that needed engine, transmission and front end work done. I will do most of the work myself and have a truck that's mechanically rock solid without worrying about getting someone else's problems.
No idea BK, but I do know that Wranglers around here seem to be made of unobtanium or something the way the prices are. Never heard of the CJ-6. Good luck with a sale to a relative.
I agree with most others. I wouldn’t charge more than $1500 to someone I like. If the rear frame is rusty (Im shocked it isn’t) than free. Around here they are starting to not pass inspection for frame patches- even good ones.
While the frame looks ok there in the pic of the right 1/4 shot, how are all the mounting tabs on it (ex hangers, shock mounts etc)? That body rust is getting bad. Are there any floor holes? If you're real close to said nephew, I'd guess 1-1.3k max. She looks like a potential money pit but there's a lotta good parts listed.
The worst part on the body is that 1/4 panel, the rest is pretty good. The frame is good, did a tear down in 2000 when all the new stuff went in. Brakes, lines ,prop. valve, steering, steering linkage and rods, leaf springs, axles ,drive shafts, radiator, gas tank, hoses, etc. The motor, trans, and T/C are the only stock things besides the body and frame. I don't want to sell him a money pit, so I need to talk to him, see his level of dedication to a type of project like this. For all I know, a day of prep on the D/T and it might just fire right up. It was running when I parked it.
