Hi all, The move went smoothly, and my backyard neighbors are a pasture full of black angus cattle. So peaceful! I checked Craigslist this morning, and what do I see? Free wood, it says. Just take it from the yard. I messaged and got the address, and headed over. Nice big oak tree they dropped and sectioned. I have an 8 foot bed truck and there's going to be another 2 loads after this one. The homeowner was great, and gave me a hand with trunk rounds. The posted pictures on CL didn't do the tree justice, as the trunk rounds are 40" across; and true to form, they are wet and heavy like you'd expect fresh oak to be. Some of those rounds are every bit of 250-300 lbs each. He offered to take his posting down for me, so I can have access to the rest of the wood and not worry about someone else coming for it. My new 3 year plan has officially begun!
I'm in an outlier of Harrisonburg, which is off of I-81 on the far west side of the state. In fact, I can see West Virginia from the top of the hill to my rear.
I'm not 100% sure, and there were no leaves to see, which would be easy to tell. Some of the bigger rounds have a thicker bark that lead me to believe it's white oak. Of course there's the over-the-top weight to it, which in my experience has been oak. When I go back for more loads I'll ask the property owner. That'll give us a definitive answer.
That may be the ticket. Or, hook up my equipment trailer and haul my new (to me) log splitter (thanks again to MasterMech for holding your fantastic log splitter for me and letting me pick it up on my way through SC!) down there and knock it all out at once.
Dat wood aint nuttin’ dat der splitter ain’t seen ‘fore. Glad to see that it will be earning its keep. Remember,
Real familiar with the area, its part of my territory. Pretty area... And the first few warm days of spring make for some great viewing when riding around the JMU area lol!
I did when I was still in GA, and it sliced through everything I touched it to like a knife through butter! It's a great saw, and I'm looking forward to using it here. I am going to go with an outdoor wood boiler for both heat and domestic hot water, and will be needing a good amount of wood CSS'ed. Sounds like a job for the 660!
Nice wood and congrats on the safe & successful move Maybe get some end grain pics to check for medullary rays.....? Did you smell your wood?
Nice score! Can't be Wow nice score! You'd have to kill someone to drag easily accessible oak in my neck of the woods. What flavor of oak? Doesn't look familiar.
