stacked a little wood, then planted 10 rootstock flowering trees. Couple dogwoods, redbuds, hawthorns, and crabapple. Mama wanted some color throughout the yard and there’s some extra open space out front from a sugar maple that came down this fall. Gonna order some evergreens to spread around and maybe a couple hardwoods as well. About 2 years ago I marked a bunch to come down in the woods, but never got around to dropping any, and now there is only a few I can still see paint on. Always a day late and dollar short. Oh well, they are standing dead and drying. Didn’t help that I had my ‘go to’ saws stolen around that time. A Stihl 290 and a 14” Shindawa. The 290 I had bought from someone here. I’ve still got a Husqvarna 373 with a 24” (iirc) but that thing is a beast. I did just pick up a refurb Echo 400, that’s a nice little saw. Man, I gotta figure out how to retire soon!! It’s 39f now and supposed to be in the 50’s this week. I should be able to get the rest stacked by the house for the year and start stacking next years.
I have planted over 30 trees here since '98, and there was quite a few here before...I can't really say I live in the woods, but now have a "wooded" lot for sure. The trees are getting big enough now to really change the feel of the property...and more of a pain to mow (and rake) too
The Chinese I think say the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is today!
I planted 200 Christmas trees about 20 years ago. I've only got about 15 left, White Spruce. They're about 30 to 40 feet tall, and have changed the look of the woods. The deer spend time under them in the deep snow.
My wife's grandmother planted a white pine behind her parents house when it was being built about 23 ywars ago. That thing is easily 65' now, and throws incredible shade in the yard.
After cutting off a few thousand pines here a few years back we thought we'd be planing new trees. Fortunately, mother nature has been filling in nicely for us. We have many new pines, oaks and cherry coming up new. I also threw a bunch of walnuts out this fall and hope a few take but if not it is no big deal.
One of the dogwoods I planted will be the tree we spread our 1st dogs ashes around. Just wanna make sure it gets established through the winter.
Funny with all the wood cutting I do but I am also planting a bunch of different trees on my property. I have only three small saplings on 2 1/2 acres and it’s extremely windy. I need some wind break and shelter and shade in the yard. Lots to look forward to in the coming decades. I’m planting a bunch that will make good firewood (as well as some that will look good for landscaping) once they get old and big enough that maybe I can coppice in my retirement.
That sounds nice. Our daughters (7 & 3) planted a Fraser Fir sapling we got from the tree farm we get our Christmas tree, and we are going to take a picture of them in front of it every year. I will harvest it for our tree some year, and carry on the tradition of burning it as the Yule Log in the fireplace the next year on Christmas morning.
