Busted some butt today, and only started watching football at 5pm. Got this all split at the wood lot. This will be shoulder wood for next fall. Basswood and a little cherry. It's one row of 18" splits, just a tad under a half cord. I used the bark that was peeling off the rounds as a ground barrier and as shingles to keep the rain/snow off the stack. I threw a few branches on top to keep the "shingles" down. It was pretty windy today, and they were staying in place. I also split the cherry up that was in rounds. It looks like it was dry enough despite being in rounds until today. I'll verify with my moisture meter this week. This tree was a blowdown and had been down a good 9 months off the ground before I cut it up last winter. Here's the trailer with all the wood I took from the lot, and the splitter. Another angle I took the trailer over to my buddy's, unloaded the splitter, and then filled the trailer with beech and cherry that I had split in spring. It's a bit over a half cord. I then stacked all the wood I brought over on the patio, and returned this 5x8 trailer to my neighbor that lent me it.
My wife helped with unloading and stacking the trailer full once I got home. I told her to take a whiff of the fresh split cherry. It smells so good, and she agreed.

I am a huge Packers fan. That's why the Sunday night game was good to get stuff done during the day. They nearly won tonight in Pittsburgh. Actually, if the refs would've called the roughing the passer call for the helmet to helmet hit( as they supposed to), the game may have not ended favorably for Pittsburgh. All in all, they played their hearts out, and have nothing to be ashamed of. I'm glad in post game on field interviews, Leveon Bell said that the Packers deserved a lot of credit for how they played, and that they played tough.
I was in and out of watching games yesterday. I woke up Friday morning with an upper respiratory infection and inner ear infection. I've been sleepin' more than I can believe. Caught about 15-20 minutes of a few games but didn't see enough of any of them to comment. LOL You did have a heck of a day on the firewood side of things. Have a good week, Horkn . Horkn have a couple of trailer very similar to yours . I love you having splitter on trailer. I don't like pulling splitter with truck. Mainly because the stress of wheels bouncing is transferred to welds on hydraulic tank. My tank is not leaking (dripping) but weeps and is always damp with fluid. I made strapping splitter down easier by drilling frame of trailer and mounting trailer ball to the rail. Works great. Just need to strap for side to side movement of rear wheels.
Good job there, Horkn. Looks like a gratifying day. Guess I'll need to invest in a trailer one of these days - I really don't like towing the splitter either.
I only had to go about 2 miles from my buddy's house to my wood lot, but I'd have to make 2 trips if I did that. Plus, the splitter is a 1-7/8" ball, and everything else is 2". So I'd have to swap the hitch balls, and that can be a pita sometimes. The splitter is about 40yrs old. No reason to stress it more than needed. I used tie downs to keep the splitter in place when there was no wood holding it from moving, but after there were splits in the trailer, it wasn't moving anywhere.
Also should extend my condolences on your qb going down. I'm a Pats fan, and would love to see a Brady/Rogers Super Bowl before either of them gets too old.
He's close to coming back. He was throwing 50 yards in the air in pre game. Now, there's always next year. Plus we'll get a top ten pick, which I can assume will be an o lineman. That game last night was still very entertaining, and highlighted what hundley has for ability.
Not a whole lot that beats that fresh cherry smell! I’ll tell you though, if you ever split a pocket of pitchy fatwood from Doug fir while you were over here in the NW, it ranks up there with the good smells too. Nice work Tom and glad to see you back on the wood splitting scene!
Funny how we think like that. When I'm splitting oaks I think, mmmm doesn't get much better. Then I get more apple and think, nothing beats apple. And I love the smell of walnut. We're connoisseurs of wood aroma!
Yeah, I have more to split too. I've got some shagbark hickory in rounds, and a lot of elm that will need splitting once the corn is harvested so I can drop a big elm in the farmer's field. I really want to wait until the ground freezes for that big boy though. I also have a pile of apple ( mmmmmm yum), black walnut, and balsam fir to split at the house. That will require me to haul said splitter the 17 miles from my buddy's house to mine. The neighbor that lent me the 5x8 trailer has a stack of rounds we can finish off with the splitter too. There's plenty I can do until the ground freezes, but frozen ground will make things a lot easier.
We agree on those smells too, its indeed a tree-t. I love smelling my wood, although some think that’s weird and that’s here too! Haha! But I tend to try to smell wood in hopes to figure out its identification. The oak smells ( red being a cheese/putrid with white being a sour or almost white wine to sweet smell) definitely come out as part of my learning curve. Others I definitely need to experience through.
