They are feeling a better today, guess closer to 48 hours for them. Blackie is still limping but glad he will stand and walk today.

And we woke up to present in the laundry room this morning, Blondie did not want to go out last night by herself. Maybe her and Earl are related?

There's plenty of light on the back deck, he's fine in the house, and the bears haven't been around in a while. He might just be scared of the dark outside. I did shine a flashlight down by the creek and he freaked out. I shut it off and aimed up front , turned it back on and he had the same reaction. It was really weird. With a leash, you almost have to drag him out the door.
During the day he follows Duke around, but he freezes up at night. I'm gonna have Val try the same thing this week, see what kind of reaction she gets.

There is some background with night time happenings. To bad he can't talk and tell you what that is!

Crossed my mind that maybe wildlife comes closer to his yard after dark (like that bear)?

Have you tried having both dogs outside before it gets dark and leave them out until after full dark?

I'll try it tonight. I have a couple of dog cables I hook them to, neither one has an issue with those. I'll leave them out at dusk, see what happens.

wildwest, the reason they give the shots in the legs now is because the vaccinations often cause sarcomas and they figure you can take a leg off but not the neck or hip.
I give all my own vaccines they all go subq under the skin in the neck area above the shoulder blades where they have a lot of loose skin. However, I refuse to do yearly vaccines.

Wildewest, I talked to a friend of mine who is a vet (retired now but still keeps up to date). He told me that Blackie's shot most likely went into a ligament or nerve. He said it can very easily happen that's why he won't give vaccines into legs. They are also a lot more painful than subq.
As for Cocoa: kittens sometimes react to vaccines with flue like symptoms, fever and body aches but are usually ok after a few days. Do you have to give yearly boosters where you live?

    Please read:
For those of you who are interested in why revaccination of dogs and cats is not needed. The link below explains why veterinarians and pharmaceutical companies want you to vaccinate as often as possible. After all they don't make money on healthy pets, do they?
Puppy Shots and Dog Vaccinations: Needed or Not?
It's a bit of an eye opener.

Thanks for looking into this Lucy!! That totally makes sense on the dog. And also he is quite slender n narrow bodied though 40 lbs, so less meat n muscle than my other dogs but still the same tendons n ligaments. The kitten info is reassuring too, though my first 2 were not fluish and definitely not for 2 days. Colorado is going more towards bi yearly annuals. Here the vet s still do annually but since I'm still figuring out how to get them done it has not been yearly.

Part of the reaction on the kitten was probably because she already wasn't feeling well before you went to the vet. Any good vet would have asked you to wait and vaccinate her later. They know not to vaccinate animals that are sick because their immune system is already compromised. For all she knew Cocoa could have been coming down with something very serious.
The vets here do first 1 year and the next time 3 year booster (by the way there is no difference in the vaccine except the sticker in the bottle). Even the pharmaceutical companies admit that the vaccines protect the animals for at least 7 years. That's as long as their research went before they ran out of funding, or so the story goes.

I just ignore them or fight it out. It makes me so angry when they tell me these barefaced lies about me putting them and their stuff in danger because my animals are not vaccinated (which they are) and when that doesn't work they threaten me with the law. So sew me. I refuse to harm my animals on purpose. 4 of my dogs died of cancer and we have lost over the years 12 cats to it. Outside of my friend and he won't talk about it when he is in the clinic (it's all about the money) there is only one vet (holistic) in this area who won't vaccinate at random and two that now will tell you that it is better to spay and neuter after the animal is fully grown if at all possible. The last is often not possible. Female cats that live outside will get pregnant from 6 months on up and so they have to be spayed early.

If you are living in an area where you have to have a dog license you can ask your vet for a certificate that states that your dog's health does not permit any further vaccination. They have to accept that where you get your license or you can successfully sew them.

Alright, I get off my soap box. I've been on it for the last 40 years.:hair:

    Earl is a weirdo.
They were on the cables until after dark, no issues- just a big snarly mess from them playing around. So they came in. Later, I had to pick him up to cross the doors threshold , and he was right next to my leg, even on the leash. I knew he had to do his business but that wasn't happening.
So Val got home, he follows her right out, does his thing- twice- and acts like a dog. Huh.
I also tried the flashlight thing inside, he freaked again, ran away like it was going to bite him.
This morning, I'm ready to head out and grab my thermos. The little "clink" noise from the handle freaked him out also. Val tells me he doesn't like metal noises. ???
She had grabbed a pair of scissors to cut something and he reacted the same way. Tonight, I removed my knife from my pants.. the little "snick" sound from the clip caused him to run away from me.
So, no flashlights, metal sounds, and me after dark. I wonder what the poor guy went through?
Other than that, he's a good boy. His presence is good for Duke, they get along great.

Obviously, someone has done a number on him @ some point. A shame that he is that fearful. Since he was better with Val, my guess is that a male was probably the perp for whatever was done to him.

No info on his past. He showed up at some ones door. They had him for a week, but their dog was possessive and didn't like him, so they brought him to the shelter.
He wasn't there for more than a few days before I brought him home. Gonna be a work in progress, but then again, he's only been here a short time.

My guess also, he loves Val. But he's a snuggler with me too , so I have to earn his trust after dark I guess. He's definitely not going to the shop, the metal noises would give him a heart attack.
