I am not sure how long it’s been there but a Hickory was down back in the woods. The boys were not as excited as me but we headed out to cut it up. The tree was down the hill from the main trail so the boys hauled it up to the man trail and I cut. There are some more rounds from the main trunk still in the woods but we were pushed for time. One son hauled the rest up the hill while the other stacked in the truck. With three guys working on it, the work went fast. After the truck was loaded we headed to town and I fed them Mexican food for their hard work.
Oh yea.....got some shaggy that's been stacked and split for 4 years on the menu for the real winter this year.
That's a good day there yes sir. We don't have Shagbark in the woods around here. It grows along the roads by old houses and farms. The colonists and farmers planted Shagbark Hickory way back in the day, now it is spread by Squirrels, but it tend to spread along the roads in the same general area. You are lucky to have it! And some smiling helpers!
Love the Shagbark! Awesome to see the helpers at work...I have three boys myself; the biggest is 6, and he's just getting to the point where he's actually a help. Well done!
That's a good size Hickory too! Nice wood for sure. I'm even more jealous of having the two young helpers, sure makes the job go quicker!
I have a lot of shagbark on my property but it rarely dies or blows over. Several years ago I had a standing dead shagbark that I c,s and burned. At the time I had an all-nighter stove and I let the fire get away from me and the hickory was burning so hot the stove had a slightly red glow to it
There is a section on our property that is loaded with Hickory. Great for squirrels and great firewood. I hate to see any of the Hickory hit the ground though.
that pile looks good in the back of the truck helpers are great too mine will help for a bit then they get side tracked youth hahahah nice property too
