The for the past three years I have participated in Movember, and posted it on Facebook to get friends and family to donate. Movember is where you grow a mustache to raise money for charities for men's health. Prostrate cancer, testicular cancer, depression, suicide and many other men's health issues. It's the only charity that I push to raise money for each year. Now you need to understand that when friends or family coming asking for me to support their charities, I do so. Without any expectation of their reciprocating mind you. I donate $25/month to one charity. In my three years, I've set a goal of $500 each year. Not a very large goal mind you. The first two years, I've donated $50 to get the ball rolling. Just need $450 from the rest of my family and friends. Heck I'd be happy if 100 of of my family/friends simply donated $1. Nope. In fact, I've never broken $100. Now going back to the I don't expect people to reciprocate. I don't, but man does it burn me a little that people can't open their wallets/purses just a little. This years it's bothering me with dad being diagnosed with cancer. To the point where I ready to just say forget it. When I say that, I don't mean to say I'd stop donating to charities, I'd just stop pushing Movember, and donate directly to something like Dana-Farber. Sorry for the rant. Just had to get it off my chest.
Parents getting sick is a major emotional pain, we lost mom to cancer in may 2015 and its still very weird not having her around. Her death gave me anxiety fits that i never experienced before. Passage of time makes it less painful. I pray that your father can win his cancer battle.
It's that time of year, everyone wants a donation for some cause or another. People get numb to the requests. Start a new trend- No shave May. Everyday a female lets the pits and legs go, that's $1.00 donated. I'm actually kinda serious about this. The guys going unshaven is not a hassle right now, it's the trend so no effort. Hence, why reward them? But the girls, that would take a true effort. The donations would mean something, an easement in their personal hygiene with a small financial sacrifice. I'll wager 80% say- Worth it! ....... or I could be wrong. Prayers for your Dad.
Interesting point. A good part of the population is growing beards, so you are right, why donate to the small percentage that are growing a mustache for a cause during the beginning of the giving season. Thanks for putting a different spin on this. I'm going to finish what I started, but with a different view. Then find another way to generate donations towards a charity I choose like you say in May. Oh heck no! I'll donate a dollar every day that they do. Although less shower time saves nat gas money. Going back to Jasons original post, I would just say don't let the pressure of trying to raise money for a charity get you down. Donate to where you feel it sits with you the best. Set your goal and feel good about what you send. Even if you change charities, don't regret it. I agree some are tight with donating. I also believe that expenses rise all the time. Groceries, heating bills, health insurance deductibles, holiday gifts, etc. It is just a tight time of year for many and get numb like Beetle-kill mentioned. This is the second year we are donating a little bit more to my sons karate school to feed 500 local families turkey dinners this upcoming week. It is very well run with a canned food drive and cash donations used to purchase additional canned goods and frozen turkeys. All volunteers get together to assemble the boxes and deliver the food. It can't get more direct than this. We help box the items as a family and it really helps reinforce giving and volunteering with our kids. Sure, we will skip going out to eat a few times over the next two months, but it will help give many less fortunate families a hearty meal.
Hate to derail but have to put this out there. Several years ago I was playing the board game taboo. Basically to try to get other people to guess a word but there are certain words you can't say. So if the word you want them to guess is pizza....you can't say pepperoni, cheese, crust, round, etc. Anyway... my buddy was trying to get me to guess a word and his clue was "cops have these". My first guess was moustaches. We won.
That's awesome, teaching your kids at a young age what is really important. What a great experience and valuable life lesson.
