Any one that witness and event like this, should never walk away thinking this is an accident, happenstance, or any other thing. They are the brush strokes from GOD him self. Like many things in the wild if we open our eyes and hearts.
I've never been there yet. My wife's been there several times as a friend of hers lives in wasilla. Now my dad got to go with my mom a couple of years ago. He was super impressed, and spoke about all the time. It was on his bucket list. I'm sure glad he got to go before he passed this is summer. I've seen very faint northern lights, both in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, some in northern Wisconsin, and even around my house the other day. But I've not had the spectacular light show like you've seen. Soon enough...
Stand by some old growth sequioa or redwood trees, a glacier, mountain, swim with a whale, etc. All of that nature will do the trick as well. It's very humbling.
Winter of '78, we were headed back to Soldotna. Going thru Turnagain Pass late at night. No other cars on the road. -10F. A clear, as clear can be, night. Started getting flashes of light in my rear view mirror. Kept looking, no other cars. After the second or third time I pulled over. We sat for a minute and there it was again. The northern sky just lite up green and waved across the sky. We got out and just stood there. The lights would start in the NE horizon and slowly wave across the sky to the NW horizon. It was accompanied by that faint cracking noise. We were both just transfixed. We got our coats and stood there, shivering, in total awe. It lasted about 15min. We got back in the car, teeth chattering and just sat in silence, looking at each other. Did that really just happen? It did. I will never forget the feeling of being totally insignificant.
I've been to Alaska perhaps 8 or 9 times. The earliest was the later part of May and the latest was early Oct. I have never seen the Northern Lights. Would love to witness them. Maybe soon in 2018. I would like to spend Christmas with my sister in Anchorage. Won't happen this year but maybe in 2018. My wife has also expressed interest in seeing the Iditarod. At least let her see the ceremonial start in Anchorage. Airfare to see the finish would be out of the question. Edit to add Beautiful state. Love the place not to mention the fishing. Fishing id=s all I have done on the last 3 trips.
