If you you have heard the crackley sound that a power line makes. Add some popping to a snapping not quite to a boom.

These iPhone pics do not do the display any justice. The were National Geographic special edition good. 628E4617-6626-482B-B481-B34A8FFD7FEC.jpeg 183EE6F2-4A70-4219-ADEF-07D4369846AD.jpeg D401C83B-9D83-4E59-855E-2F3F65F6514A.jpeg F0535516-847F-4857-91C3-50147611A502.jpeg

Those fascinate me. Saw them her one time several years back, it was red. Not near as intense as yours though...

    Incredible.

A real camera would wow you with the beauty. The panoramic, depth, totality is what’s missing in the pics. I shut my truck off right in the middle of the road. Leaned on the grill, and watched the show. To see the color reflecting off the snow, the mountains and spruce trees silouetted in the green light. A show of this magnitude and the beauty. It is a big self reflecting moment. The billions of stars looking down.

Standing there looking at the expansive view tall snow covered mountains, stars, northern lights....sure will make a fella feel small.

The color of the lights is based off the gases in the atmosphere. Green light comes from nitrogen/oxygen. I would have to look up the other color/gas combinations.

From my experiences w/the lights when I lived in Alaska was
the feeling of how small we really are. I always felt totally
    humbled by the experience.

Thank you Sir! This is the location that I feel that I belong. The first 5 minutes in Alaska I knew I am in the location that I am meant to be in. I cant imagine being anywhere else.

True, Alaska is a more than words. She is more than a destination. She is very special place, she is an experience that will change your life. Even for a few days, this is a place to experience.

Winter time, you need the darkness to see them. Fly into Fairbanks plan to stay a week. Rent a car, you will see them, drive out of town, away from the light. Advantage is the winter is not tourist season and much cheaper. Hotels are just above $100 bucks, food can be had on the cheap. Rental car, don't know about that one. you would be in for an amazing trip. Its a must do!
