A nice Husqvarna 55 -- keep your pants on, it's open port.

Having decided to rehabilitate a Husky 350 I have some affection for, I am going to let this saw go. I got it from the same retiring tree service guy who sold me the 064 I recently listed here. It wasn't running when I got it, but only needed a spark plug and a new fuel line & filter. I just measured the compression at 170 psi, cold (original top end). From what I can see, it's been used little.

This is a great firewood saw, a pound and a quarter lighter than the 455 that succeeded it but with the same horsepower and a magnesium crankcase, simpler and easier to work on, and still new enough for parts to be widely available. Having bucked a couple of trees with it, I can say that it is strong, runs beautifully and oils profusely.

If you've glanced at the pics then you've already noticed the most noticeable cosmetic flaw: the plastic handle covering was gouged by an encounter with another running saw. The additional texture actually improves the grip a bit. The top of the sprocket cover has been singed by exhaust, and there's a tiny chip in the kill switch. Otherwise it's just typical scuffing of the sprocket cover and minor blemishes elsewhere.

Saw will include both 3/8" and .325" rim sprockets. It also has an outer bucking spike, but it protrudes a bit further than the inner spike so I sort of suspect it's not the correct spike for the saw.

Dual-purpose. For buyers, it's information. For me, it's something to remember it by.

 

If you'd bought this one, you would've replaced the handle. You wouldn't have been able to help yourself!

 

Can you tell if a 55 is open or closed port any other way then looking in the cylinder? I have one just curious which it is.

 

I'm no expert, but I found this discussion on Another Site that has a lot of good information. All signs seem to point to mine being open-port.

 

From my recent research, the best way is the identifying ++++++ marks cast into the cylinder just under the decomp release.

 

Just the same, $175 for this saw in this good of condition is a good solid buy for somebody. It'll fill your wood wagon without complaint or problem for years to come if maintained properly. It shouldn't last long.

No, it's a small mount. I should stipulate that I'm not an expert on bar mount standards, but it takes the same bar as my 350. But yeah, my intention was to hang onto the bar, because I don't have another for the 350.

 

Had I not just lucked into a nice 55 with closed port, I'd be on this one. This is a bargain for a workhorse of a saw.

 

I am thinking 18, 325 Same as the 445 so chains will fit both.
So I did a little research on closed or open port. Cuz I don't know jack
What's the advantages and disadvantages?
Does the open port have less torque and higher RPM's
