Locust Score (I think)

My cousins brother in law had (2) trees cut down and bucked a couple of months ago. I was able to get there today and load up my truck
Is this Black Locust?

Whoo... you’re gonna love the heat off that!
Im burning a little at a time and found it starts great for me, fast. Some say it takes forever to but when it does, you’ll be seeing some pretty flames. If you get the bark off or work on splitting it from the outside, makes a big difference in drying. BL Bark just soaks a lot of moisture so focus on the core.

 

Thanks Ben, how long does it season after splitting/stacking.? I'm hearing couple of different things... I'm going to work on getting that bark off when splitting.

 

For me it is a mix. Some was ready to go and I rechecked the moisture, others are likely to take the year. Having split a lot in the spring, sat the summer, I believe another summer for me to be safe. For you it sounds like 2 years would do it well. Give it a check, you have good exposure right? Also give it a smell, the stronger the smell is the more moisture it tends to have. I will say this, its a long burning wood. A good half round or two big quarter splits lasted a night for me.

 

Thanks bro. I'm hoping to get some split tomorrow. Have to build another rack to put in a good area to let it sit. The exposure I want to put this BL in gets good air flow but won't get as much sun as my (2) 16 foot racks that currently hold my red oak.
There's a good amount of this BL left and I'll be heading out to grab more if it's available. Looking forward to see how's this burns in my fireplace.

 

Careful in the fireplace - word on the street is that black Locust is pretty sparky

I have to say thank God I brought (2) of the Fiskars log tongs, what a back saver picking these rounds up and walking them to my truck.. And the Fiskars Pickaroon for picking the rounds out of my truck. Great tools all around

 

If you give it a year and a half to 2 years to season, it'll certainly be ready. It's the summers that really seasons the wood. If you get 2 Summer's with of seasoning, that should do it.

Nice score!!! That'll heat like you can't believe when dry. As stated, it does spark a lot so watch that. Split & stacked now, it might be ready by 2018/19.

 

I can't really tell what it is. I see a lot of Black Locust but I am not sure this is it. Do you have another picture of the end grain?

Yep, bl for sure, I have a lot of it. I like it either way, bark or barkless. When dry that bark burns awesome.

I'm really thinking of getting a Wood Stove Pool (WSP) heater in the next year or so for our pool. I'm thinking this BL would be great to work on heating my pool water.

 

Looking good MikeyB and you bet it would complement your pool. Great hot burning wood for that.

 

I agree with previous posters including Locust Post who should know locust when he sees it - Black Locust.
