Roxul?

    I’m planning on getting some roxul this weekend and stuffing it up the chimney around the pipe. My question is does it matter which kind of roxul I get? My local lowes has r15 and it’s not labeled for use in duct or masonry and they have one that is r0 “safensound” not labeled for use in ducts or masonry either. Does it matter what I use or can I use any of them?

    The R15 is what I used and it has been in there 3 years with no problem at all.

    Being rock wool, I can’t see there being any difference in the stuff...my unlearned opinion, of course.

    I really don't know if any difference at all either just went and looked at what I had bought. I bought mine for not only around the liner/chimney block off but it was for insulating between overhead floor joists in the garage below the house floors.

    Look up the data sheet on whatever you buy just to make sure, but I think any of it will work because all their stuff is non-combustible I believe.

    I used Roxul R15 in my ZC fireplace chase. IIRC, it was rated as a fireproof insulation. And if I'm not mistaken, the insulation inside my Napoleon NZ3000 fireplace factory built case is also Roxul.

    Check online to be sure, but I'm thinking all the stuff they make is fire rated.

    You could look into Kao-wool, but yer gonna need to get your $$$ out for that stuff....

    Where are you all buying this? I was in Lowe's tonight by the insulation, and back in plumbing with the gas venting chimney. All I could find is fiberglass batts, bales of loose fill, and huge bags of roxul with backing

    I bought mine in Lowes, that was around 5 years ago when I built the fireplace.

    Lol funny you should mention them. I was looking around for a big box store that carried our brand of siding to check into getting some sill strip instead of ordering our color and waiting two weeks. Menards carries it in stock but closest store is in OH and they wanted 200 bucks shipping to get it to me......shame, they carry a lot of great stuff

    The Lowes here has piles of the unfaced roxul. Either the r15 or the r0 fornsound proofing. It’s all in the insulation section but good luck if you ask someone about it they won’t have a clue.

    I called roxul today and talked to a really nice lady from Australia. She said that they do not have a product rated for what I want to do as they have not performed any tests or studies so she cannot recommend I use it in this manner although in theory it should be just fine as long as it is unfaced and my stove pipe doesn’t get above 2100*:bug: I told her if it’s that hot I won’t have a house anymore and that it is usually only a couple hundred *. So she said that while she can’t recommend I use their product for this it should work in theory but maybe I should look into a ceramic insulation instead that has been tested. So with that in mind I think I’ll go with the theory that it should work.:whistle:

    That's just CYA. The stuff may melt over 2100* but I don't think it will burn...would pretty much just become lava I would think...
