I was gonna' say a soft Maple.
I cut a lot of that in the last couple years. Decent firewood that only needs a year if you're in a pinch.

That is hickory, a young tree that still has smooth bark. Notice that some of the bark is starting to show a ridge pattern, and the wood has a dark heartwood. I guess it is Pignut or Mockernut - not Shagbark. I think the wood of all hickories is all the same for firewood.

Ah, yes. I have cut shaggys with smooth bark like that on the upper branches. The smell of the smoke would confirm it

All beech I have had would have the bark falling off by now, so I may withdraw my entry.

I'm saying hickory too. Obviously not shagbark, but sure smells like it when it burns. We've found a few pieces hidden in the stacks this year.

    not smooth enough for beech
bark looks like some of the maples around here but I've never seen one with dark heartwood like that, that I remember ( have cut an awful lot of boring white swamp maple )

You can't miss hickory nuts all in yard, they are a pain to get up. mowing over them sounds like machine gun fire.
