My buddy and I decided to do some cutting, so we started on a white oak hoping to skid everything back to the processing area before dark. The oak was too heavy, so I'll have to clear a safer route to bring the trailer. We managed to skid out a half cord of ash though. The video below is kinda funny, so I thought I'd post it......
I've seen them talk about the balls falling back in place like that. But never seen it.... That's kinda of cool watching it. Thanks very educational.
I honestly did not think it would have this time. If I cut any lower, saw would have been in the root ball at the one edge of another tree. I did think about riding it up!
Cool. I've seen them pop back up when clearing a blowdown on a hiking trail. But never in slow motion like that.
great video Brian.....looked like you had the center of balance just about perfect on that one! That rootball I cut off on my neighbor's red oak last year was HEAVY.....it was standing almost 11' out of the ground, I cut it off at ground level (very carefully), and WHOOOMPF......it slammed back into the crater....
Yea make sure your careful this happened around my way and a man was crushed and killed by the root ball. Awesome video though.
That was cool. Seen vids of that too, but not in slow-mo. I have a couple Maples in the same root ball that I'm still trying to get to. Should be interesting, but I doubt what happened in that vid will happen on this one.
I had a couple I cut last winter. They would not stand up though. Sometimes in the spring, they did. I hope no animal was making a home there at the time. Always keep a sharp eye on where your balls are going and how fast too.
