I read in another thread that it's an unwritten rule that we are required to give a description of our pet if we use their photo as an avatar, here goes. My wife and I have raised, owned beagles for over 45 years. We raised them for pets and hunting and later for field trials. Family and work got in the way of trialing so I found homes for my pack and for a few years just had "farm dogs" , a couple of weimaraners and some labs. My oldest grandson wanted a dog and had the name Newt picked out before we found him a dog. I responded to an ad on swap shop for beagle pups and I had to pick from 10 pups , a huge litter for a beagle. Well I picked out "Newt" and decided he needed a buddy so I picked out Pearl, a buckskin colored female. We raised them in a kennel for a year or so and despite the dangers decided to let them run loose. They had a great life running rabits when they wanted and living outside until later in life coming in the house or shop when they wanted. Newt got run over in the driveway at about 8yo but survived with some physical permanent injurys but also some brain damage. I nursed him for a month or so until he could get around and we developed a bond like I had never had with another pet. He lived to 14 and I probably extended his life too long by convincing the vet to treat him past the time it was suggested to put him down. We had a 2 year stretch that we lost 4 dogs from old age 2 labs and 2 beagles and for the first time in 45 years without a dog. After a year or so we decided to look for another beagle and after looking for rescue dogs with no luck my sister in law set us up with a co-worker that had a litter of beagle pups due but that fell through because they had all females. A week or so later she called and her friend with the pups had a friend with a male that was a hunting cull and we needed to act fast or the guy was going to dispose of the dog. We drove 75 miles in a snowstorm to "rescue " Bullet. He's a nice looking dog that was afraid of everything especially women. We made him a house/lap dog and he is completely useless and spoiled. He minds me well but not anyone else and we let him out and he doesn't take off, just does his business and comes back to the door. We will have him 4 years at the end of December and we think he was a year and half old when we got him. He's a great dog but the difference between him and Newt is Newt was like my brother after his injury and I never had to correct him and we hung out. Bullet is like my son and requires correction and minor discipline but he does pretty good. Last week my son and his family went to Disney world on fall break and left their dog with us a Cavalier sir Charles Spaniel, a great little dog . "Larson" and Bullet got along so well we've decided to try to fund Bullet a friend.
Great story. Anyone who says they are "just a dog" has never truly known the bond of man and best friend.

great story bang .. My family in Woodstock run beagles and Do field trials and for hunting rabbits... so I know that arena pretty well.. I'm glad you have one that gives you happiness. dogs are great wether working dogs or house pets.
