I have seen some used saws cleaned up to show room like conditions here. Just wondering how you guys do it. Any special products/cleaners tools or brushes?
I fill up the tub, add some bubble bath, a few salts and essential oils and let it soak with a glass of red wine.
Strip it down and take the clutch bell off. Spray it down with degreaser and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then blast it with compressed air. Not showroom but clean enough to go get it dirty again. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Generally speaking if a used saw looks to be in new condition , it was meticulously maintained . If it rides around in the bed of the truck ,and maintenance consists of “whatever gets worn out ,or broke gets fixed “ , then no amount of cleaning will bring it back to showroom appearance . JMHO
Simple Green and a quick rinse followed by an air blast (not directed towards intake). A little WD-40 and a warm spot to dry.
Usually the compressor and blow gun get most of it then it’s back to cutting. If it’s an old crusty one that you are going to resurrect or just one that’s getting ready for any internal surgery I go compressor and dental pick first then simple green and a wash down and good drying. For anything really stuck on Toothbrushes and WD40 usually break it up. As far as the bars go and some of the stubborn crevices around certain areas a good set of dental type or o ring picks work great! It’s Surprising how much junk can get packed in the bar groove!
I use a piece of thicker, wider, metal banding from a lumber yard. Cut it about 8" long, grind a little hook into the end and Wala, instant bar tool.
Simple green or 409. Whichever bottle is closer. Castrol super clean also Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
And before I put it back together I clean out the clutch bell and I’ll lightly hit the clutch with some 200 grit sand paper to make sure its grabbing the bell like it should be Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Simple Green diluted 10-1 with warm water in spray bottle,409 or store brand equivalent,WD-40,old toothbrushes, old t shirts/socks for rags, compressed air. (Wear your safety glasses)
Dollar tree foaming shower cleaner Soak for a few minute's then pressure wash. Customers couldn't believe it was the same saw before lol I hate working on filthy saw's. Foaming oven cleaner works too but i don't like the smell.
Oven cleaners frequently contain lye (or similar caustic), which will attack aluminum and may attack paint and magnesium "The reaction between sodium hydroxide and a few metals is also hazardous. Aluminium reacts with lyes to produce hydrogen gas. Since hydrogen is flammable, mixing a large quantity of a lye such as sodium hydroxide with aluminum in a closed container is dangerous—especially when the system is at a high temperature, which speeds up the reaction. In addition to aluminum, lyes may also react with magnesium, zinc, tin, chromium, brass or bronze—producing hydrogen gas."
