It's time, I need to replace the strings. Pretty sure they're a .090 diam., but how the heck do they- 1.- be removed? 2.- install new strings? Of course, my destruction information is long gone, so anyone have any tips/ tricks? Thanks, JB.
There is a set screw inside the head, the allen wrench with the point on it that came with the soot eater fits it.
I'm gonna be honest, I feel like a blind dumbazz . I looked inside the ball-head but didn't see any set screw. Lo and behold- there it is. Sonofa... Just gonna substitute some electrical tape for the foil crimp sleeve, should be good to go. Thanks guys, it's the little things.
Yeah, that sheet metal wrapped around the strings is mangled beyond all recognition once it is used. I have not replaced my strings yet but plan to do the same thing, just install them w/out any cover or maybe use a wrap or two of tape also. The worst thing they can do is break off and that is not anything awful. Brian
In light of this, Im wondering if I should get this set up for the chimney or stick with the push rod and wire bush that is common with roof climbers. I’m not told the soot eater was a POS but the components you speak of seems a bit short lived.
With your pipes straight up and if you're going to do it from the top, simple easy peasy, brush, no drill needed
That is probably the way to go if cleaning from the top. No need to keep attaching and running a drill every 3' if you use a brush. The spinning string type cleaners really shine when used from the bottom up. And even then a brush would be faster other than having to stop and back up, which brushes do not do very well- I have a cap on the top of my chimney and cannot go all the way through to reverse the brush.
