Went cutting with my dad this morning. We had both trucks full in about an hour and a half. All Douglas fir.
That is a good amount of wood there. You could be making trips all week long for that pile. Nice haul. How does the Douglas fir burn. I have never tried any.
Where was the invite??? Hahaha! Looks like great fun! Glad you got some before we get into some clouds for the week.
My dad got a load at the same spot yesterday. We cut 2 truck loads this morning and dumped them at my house, then I went to work. My dad went back this afternoon, cut another load, then took it home and got it split (by hand) and stacked. HE'S ALMOST 68!
I like burning doug fir. Its better than lodgepole pine and way better than spruce. Ive been collecting lots of doug fir lately because its such a good wood to burn. Love the colours you see when you have a fresh cut. Thats great! Thats a bit of a bar setting for us guys younger than him to aspire to. Good for him. Hope Im still doing what hes doing at 68!
I'll be back for more next week. Fir is a favorite around here where high-BTU hardwoods are mostly unavailable. It'll dry in under a year and leaves very little ash. It's my opinion that the replanted fir available today from managed forests is lower quality firewood than it used to be. It's been engineered to grow as fast as possible and gets harvested at a younger age. Just my opinion.
Now that you mention it I recall this coming up before, probably in conversation with you. Ive wondered if its the same up here? Ive been burning some ultra dry fir the last three weeks or so, lasts longer than my lodgepole pine. There are a few big old firs laying on the ground that I want to dig into as I think they will hold higher prospects for burning than with younger trees. Lots of dead fir around me. I do have to drive a half hour to access though. I guess thats not to bad of a drive. Looks like you and your dad have some easy pickings. Good to see.
That scene really reminds me of going out into the woods to cut with my dad back in the day...sometimes I really miss the western forests!
I would agree with you that the 3rd growth douglas fir is not as good of a firewood, its tough to beat an old 30 or 40 inch across the butt douglas fir snag for softwood firewood. And it even splits easy if its been dead a long time and the bark is falling off.
No such thing as "easy firewood" but some is easier than other Nice & fast load. Pull along side a stack of logs & start cutting
We went back and got 2 more pickup loads this morning. 90% fir with a little alder and hemlock. When we were done my dad informed me that he doesn't have room for more wood, so both loads came to my house. And here's a pic showing how wide the grain is on this fir.
Lootta wood to be had! Good lookin' pooch. I run Duratracs too. Been real pleased with their performance and mileage.
I'm wondering why that wood wasn't used by the loggers? (Cutting off a pile like that around here will get you a date in the courthouse.) Sure are large growth rings, too!
