I just noticed the Menards flyer is advertising FVP Bar and Chain Oil on sale $4.99 a gallon. I don't know of the quality but it says it's made in Iowa. Just issuing a heads up for any sale shoppers!!
I bought some Menard's on sale a couple years ago. It smelled like reclaimed Hyphoid or sulpurized gearbox oil. However it works fine as bar oil.
That is about the regular price of the "Poo-land" bar oil at Wal-Mart. Seems to work fine. I thin it down a bit with a cup or two of diesel per gallon.
My experience exactly... Except the works fine part. It even had little chunks in it that clogged my oiler!
Why do you thin it down... oh wait, Palmer, AK - got it! Although you could have been a little bit more clearer and said: "I keep it from being a solid by adding a cup or two of diesel per gallon." Just sayin'!
If this is it, it's made by Pennzoil - Quaker State. http://www.menards.com/main/outdoor...nsaws/fvp-bar-chain-oil/p-1679723-c-10109.htm http://www.menards.com/msds/103925_001.pdf
I always buy extra when Menards has it on sale but have not tried that brand yet (Menards switched brands in the last couple of years). Will be picking up a couple of gallons when I get to Menards.
I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this but.......... I have been running used motor oil through all my saws since 2001. Now it doesn't go right from the trucks to the saw. I store it in a 55 gallon drum. When I need bar oil I pump a couple gallons out and run it through a paint strainer. I have 12 saws and 5-6 years ago one of the 200T's stopped oiling. I haven't torn it apart to look at it because I have spares. But in 12 years that's the only problem I've had that could be attributed to the oil. OK let the verbal beatings begin.
The temps we have here are quite the same as much of the lower 48.... At least areas that you'd have reason to cut firewood for heating. I thin it down because I've found it to be a bit too thick and it doesn't flow enough.... at normal temps. I'm sure at -20* its thick as tar, but I'm not crazy enough to be running a chainsaw then.
I paid $9.99 for a gallon of oil at tractor supply the other day. I remember I was at a hardware store here quite a while back and needed bar and chain oil and was in a hurry. I grabbed a gallon and paid $14.99 for it! Highway robbery. But, they just went out of business too. Almost everything they sold was more expensive than Tractor Supply or Lowes. That's why I never bought there. I only rented their splitter because it was an Iron and Oak for $60/day. Now they are out of business in this area anyway. Tough to compete with the big guys. Wish I could have bought that splitter.
I have used three different labeled bar & chain oils from Menards with out any problems. If it is real cold outside I will ad a pint of ATF to 3/4 gallon of B/C oil to thin it down. Works great!
