Have your friend bring his splitter over :)

But seriously, I don't think it has to be an either/or proposition. If you find a good deal on a splitter just buy it. Then you can decide on any given day whether you want to hand split, based on your type of wood and how you feel that day.

My local tractor supply has two that they will be putting together shortly, but I'll keep watching Craigslist. Might just need to make an investment this spring.....:)

I'll look at it as not giving up hand splitting, but adding a new tool to the garage.

    Thanks

i store two in my barn. an old brave and a big butt timberwolf. i would say 80% of my rounds still fall victim to the x27.

I chose to go hydraulic before my body forced me to. Turns out I have enough difficulty finding time to split as it is so I think I made the right choice. Hopefully I'm saving a good bit of wear and tear on my body too.

Huskee 22 ton is a good machine. I've probably run close to 30 cord through mine over the past couple years and it hasn't given me an ounce of trouble.

I've only run into a couple rounds that it couldn't handle (some 28" wavy hedge).

I still split a fair amount by hand...but only the easy stuff because I can do it faster with a maul.

I bought mine when I cut down a big pin oak. I split all the limb by hand very easily. Then came the trunk and those rounds laughed at the axe, maul, and wedge. Literally all three bounced out of the rounds. Put my tools down walked over to the truck and arrived home an hour later with a Huskee 22 ton. I still split by hand occasionally and enjoy it. But only on the nice straight stuff like cherry and oak. Anything else that is twisted or knotty gets the splitter out. The trailer load is load number one from one tree. The second load was all the bigger stuff, ended up with 6 cord out of that tree.

I got my Huskee 22 ton at the same auction where I got my new farm. Paid $500 for it. The previous owner said it had been used two times before but I don't think it had been used at all.

I've modified the wedge to make it both wider and higher plus put a new foot - works much better now!

    Pics of the new wedge:

The skidsteer and tractor trailer are my old neighbors. I paid him $200 to load and haul it home for me only a mile away, it took me 4 hours to unload and move the load to the my splitting area. This is the haul from the tree.

Nice! I've had to turn a log around more than once because the wedge didn't split it the whole way through. Might have to steal this idea. ;)

I use to be like you, would leave the big uglys in the woods, but when I finally bought a hydro I realized, those big crotches and stuff that wouldn't hand split adds up to a lot of wood. You will bring home a lot more wood with a hydro splitter. I bring home some nasty looking stuff and it burns just as good as a perfect piece of wood. All I could say is get one and stop leaving good firewood in the woods.

I have split EVERYTHING I bring home and I don't leave anything over 2-3" behind. Sometimes I get some gnarly pieces from twisted or crotch rounds but even they make good firepit wood or they get tossed into the "ugly" pile that gets burnt one way or the other.

LOL, ain't that the truth, the wife had been trying to get me to buy one for years. I was like nah it's good exercise. well one summer I had cut probably ten cord of wood and had it laying all over the yard.

Then I kinda wrenched my wrist some. I was piddlin in the yard and walked back to the pile, looked at the wrist, then the pile, I said forget this. I knew I wasn't going to be to swing that monster maul for a while.

Went inside, told the wife get ready were going to TSC, She said Oh yeah? what for? I said were going to buy a new splitter. as she got up I heard the words Bout time.

Once you go hydraulic you won't go back! trust me swinging an axe is for the birds… I love my splitter and will never go back to full time splitting by hand. I can split far faster far more efficient and far safer with a splitter. Now for a cup holder:D

'Bout the opposite of my story. Saved all summer working a 2nd job so I could buy my splitter. I get it at dealer cost for chrissakes, and when I get it home she says, "You could just use an axe like everyone else!".:rolleyes: I let her split the first cord (gave her her choice of tools) and haven't heard chit about it since. :D;)
