In my thread about hauling wood I made the comment that stooping down to work with my little electric SpeeCo splitter was hard on my back. That lead to talk about building a stand. Today I decided to see if my little work platform that I got on a Lowe's Black Friday offer would be big enough for me to use as a stand for the splitter. I got the work platform out and set it up. Now I cannot lift the splitter but I put the light end up on the platform and was then able to lift the heavier rear end of the splitter up onto the stand; the key is not lifting all at once. The work platform put the splitter at a nice height that I could work from. I could also place wood under the splitter as I worked. I was able to actually work faster with this setup. If I had help, I could really hustle with getting the wood split; the biggest time waster was walking to get more wood to split. I made a couple of videos; not the greatest production, to show it all in action splitting some sweetgum. However, it appears that one can only embed from a certain whitelist of sources and I was not able to add html code; otherwise I could have just added a video tag and linked to the video on my server. Perhaps the admin will consider such a feature in the future so we can host our own videos and embed them here. I don't want to go under contract with Google. To view the video you have to visit a web page I set up on my server. You should be able to see them with any browser; including phone browsers, that support html5 video. I should have turned on the splitter before filming. I was holding the camera with one hand and operating the splitter with my other hand and that is why you get the in your face close-ups, . In actual use I did not let the wood just fall from the splitter as you see in the videos. http://netweb360.net/video/wood_splitter.html Here are some photos as well. Lowe's had these work platforms on offer last year on Black Friday but I did not buy any as funds were tight; what is new there lol. I think if they put these on offer again this year I will grab a couple as they can be used for many things; for example, a splitter stand.
I had never seen one of the little electric splitters work before watching your video. Im kinda impressed really made easy work of that sweetgum. Would it work that good on elm, thats the only true hardwood i ever have to split and not much over 3/4 cord per year at that.
That is a good question. I think there is some elm on the property. I have split locust and oak with it. There are some large rounds of willow oak that I could try tomorrow. I also have split hickory with the splitter. I have split some really nasty twisted wood as well; some I had to keep at it but in the end it won.
How much $ do the electric splitters cost? Might be kinda nice for my 75 year old father who has wood heat in his shop. I would even use it on the elm.
They are not too expensive. Harbor Freight has a 5 and 7 ton. I found mine on Craig's List. In fact, there is a coupon for the 5 ton HF for $229.99; coupon # 10017699
New coupon is out. They put these on offer on a regular basis. The current coupon I posted on another thread states good through 30 November 2017. So plenty of time to think about getting one.
Nice work Kimberly. When I picked up my 7ton Boss electric splitter I had it set up a table and that really didn't work too well for me, then I picked up there leg stand kit with wheels, definitly made my life easier, but it was starting to work on my back from bending down to operate the handle. My splitter is one handed operation so I decided to extend the handle to a more comfortable height. I picked up a length of M8X1.25 threaded rod with coupling and nuts and now I don't bend at all. These small electric splitters are pretty tough....
The table I picked up from Boss, it's a great table. I put my wheel barrow right under the front and the logs drop right off into the wheel barrow as I'm splitting
I need to see about something for my splitter. I normally try to catch the wood so it is not just falling at my feet.
