While out scrounging last week, I spotted this tre that had been dropped by US Forestry and got all excited for a couple trips the next day...early! Turns out to be nothing more than basswood! Sometimes, they'll cut it up into rounds like that, don't know why....Usually when they do it to hardwood, it doesn't last long-kinda like crows on a deer carcass thing!
To bad it's basswood, Dave! Looks like there's plenty of it there as well. I bet you were excited when you saw it from a distance.
My thoughts exactly.... great for a quick warm up at the cottage, no? Hopefully Horkn won't see this thread
Hate to admit, but somewhere along the way I became a firewood snob. Won't gather anything less than silver maple any more, I would have left it too. If still there in 2 years, it'll be compost.
Actually, once the weather cools a bit, I may grab some.....still waffling over it. It's an uphill climb to the truck anyway.
I went to a scrounge found out it was a big cottonwood , a crap ton of it , I figured I'm hear I'll get a load of easy stuff . Once it was dry , about 3/4 of a cord , I was glad to have it , burned it last fall n spring
I wouldn't have been able to resist the temptation with it all bucked up already.. Of course, I also wouldn't have known it was basswood until I got home and looked it up. I just split and stacked a cord of willow over the weekend in this nasty heat, so I may be a bad example of hoarding efficiency. (Hey, at least it was delivered!)
