So, tell us how this was stacked. How high? Single row or more? How long? What is under the stack? etc.
Can't eliminate groundhogs. I have a lot of those critters around here. Could even be one of my three cats. It was the last stack in a row of stacks. Concrete pad under it with 4x4s on the top of the concrete to get the splits off the concrete. Stack was 8' long and 4.5' high. They were 16" splits. The stack to the east of this stack has a precarious lean to the west, but it is still perfectly stacked.
I keep an eye on my stacks and when they start to lean I try to straighten them out before they topple. A small hand sledge will do nicely to tap things back in line...sometimes I'll just grab a larger split and use that to ram things back straight...only takes 5-10 minutes...usually once, maybe twice per year does the trick...still doesn't always prevent them getting knocked down by critters though
How much separation between the stacks? Sounds like a cat chased something in between a couple rows and sent things tumbling.
Could be. They were stacked less than a foot apart. when I stacked it last time I stacked close to the east stack figuring it would support the east stack if it decided to topple. Still wanted to allow for some air circulation.
