Change ours every fall when we set the clocks back. Think it's time for new ones this year. Built the new house 9 years ago so it may be time for all new. Can't be to safe. Good post thanks for the reminder.

Coincides with the time change in the fall around here too. Fire Departments here usually give out the 9 volts for smoke detectors....nice!

The small town my camp is in the volunteer firefighters go around sweeping chimney for free in the fall. I guess the would rather sweep than go into a burning building.

Yes, used to do that here also. I think the homeowners would pay them in beers....don't know why it was discontinued though....

I cant have a smoke detector, my cooking sets them off. In the bitter end the smoke detector gets bashed with a 5 pound hammer or thrown out the back door. As one who loves a laugh i find it very funny to take a smoke detector with low batteries and put it under someones car seat. The weird little beeps they make can drive someone nuts. I did this to my former mother inlaw.

I have always done 1st of the year.
There's usually plenty of batteries around from Christmas.
Usually check the batteries in everything, flashlights, remotes, etc. at the same time. More for leakage than anything.

Ours in the kitchen goes off every now and then but a wave of air with a magazine or newspaper usually shuts it up.

Laid in bed before 6 am the other Saturday and heard a bleeping downstairs , or rather she did and her elbow woke me up .
Comes down and monoxide alarms going off , weird I'm sure I'd let it die down the night before.
Opens windows and doors anyway thinking it's gone faulty I put it in the garden and it stopped in a couple of minutes. Brings it in and off it goes again , goes to fire and it's really hot and half a logs still glowing from the night before.
My lad had come down put two logs in and shut the dampers , howling gale during the night( so I were told ) and the fumes must have blown back down the flue as it cooled.
Scary and didn't think that could happen .
Either way battery's got changed just because it had been going off .

~whew~ Good to have the detector, and that it worked!

Sounds like a teachable moment to me. Nothing harsh, but a nice little family discussion.
