hey everyone....we just had a quadra fire 4100 installed. the unit sticks out a little bit ( not a flush mount)...we liked this option for radiant heat. my question is...do you have to have the blower on once an established fire is going to keep the fire box cooler?

I've never tried running mine entirely without the blower so I can't tell you for sure. It does take a while for my fan to kick in and it seems a bit hot at the point that the fan does click in. At any rate to get effective heat out of it you will need the blower on, no question about that.

I wouldn't rely on it to heat your house during an extended power loss. It just does not have enough air circulation. If that is one of your concerns I suggest you think of a small generator.

I for one, and this is just me, not the gospel probably. I always run mine when the fire is up and running at a good hot burn just because of the blower would set there and cook. I have had mine really cooking and it sounded like the bearings were drying out on the blower even while running.

    Congrats on your new stove.

We ran our insert many times without the blower when the power was out. If your looking for heat the blower will help circulate it, if your going for ambiance I'm not sure you need the blower? Take it with a grain of salt, I did not consider what Locust Post mentioned above either (we just needed the heat).

I've got the same quadrafire 4100. You don't have to run the fan, but to really get heat out of it, run the fan.

You won't hurt it to not run the fan. However with the fan on, it can heat quite a bit of space. I use mine as my primary source of heat, and let the furnace be quiet as much as possible.

    Right!:handshake:
And if one wanted the other (al beit, limited) amenities of life during a power outage, one would have a generator in place which would easily run the fan for said insert.

I'm sure it could run off of an inverter and car battery for a while too.

I have an England Stove Works insert. I do not have a surround and the flue is blocked with insulation. With my setup in my house (very small, open floor plan) I do not use the blower and it works fine. One of the techs from Esw is a member on "the other site" and he said it would work and work safety, however heat output would drop.

Fwiw, my wood stove is not my primary or secondary source of heat, it's my toy, if I was using it as a sole source of heat, I would use the blower, but my house would be hotter than hell!
