Hi all... Hoping to get some input on hearth height for our Ideal Steel wood stove install. We are at the point in construction of our new house where we have to decide. We would like to raise it off the floor to allow for seating on the sides of the stove (seems to be a popular spot in our house). In our last house, we had a Quadrafire 7100, which is more like a fireplace. The hearth height in front of the stove was at 18" and we really liked it. We are thinking that might not look quite right with a free standing wood stove, but not sure. A little about our house... The room is 28'x20' great room with 8/12 vaulted ceilings. Stove will be installed in the corner. Wall height is 14', vaulted ceilings going to 23'. I included a picture of a similar hearth design, though we will likely go higher with rock in the back. Thanks in advance for any input.
I would elevate it like your previous home for the convenience of stoking. I think Backwoods Savage has one on a platform and it's gorgeous.
Just follow install CTCs and you should be good to go. I built my hearth up 1', and should have gone a little higher. I think Backwoods Savage Dennis went 16" on his. Lots of folks have done this. That's a nice look. Gonna' have a ceiling fan or two in there? Hmmm, I don't see pics.
Ok, I stalled to talk to my wife for a minute and wildwest beat me to it. Moral, don't talk to wife...........no wait, that won't work.
I own an IS yes go at least 16 inches.. you want the ash pan that's on the bottom.. a higher stove is much easier to see ... load... rake.. coals all thing you need to do to stove.. only word of caution.. I do not know how tall you are.. the cat.. is on top you have to lift lid lift up so make sure that is a comfortable height.. I would do 2 feet high if I were to do it again.. my knee aren't good
I agree I have stove in a corner just like the OP has but it is at floor level. It would have been easier to stoke if it were elevated.
Yes, our hearth is 16". It makes it just about perfect for putting a chair next to the stove when loading it. My body does not like the bending to load the stove so this is why we raised it. I recall that I wanted to go 12" because that would mean no cutting on the ceramic tiles but wife was set on 16". She was right as it works well. You can see we have a sliding door beside the stove with a wood rack on the porch so loading the stove is a breeze. In the picture, my wife was making applesauce so that's why the pots on the stove.
OMG, the wrong covers on the pots would drive me nuts. I've been kicked out of kitchens because of it too. LOL
so does she hold that over your head? my wife get a little card that says "yes dear were right" she shows it to me every once in a while when I'm being stubborn .. so once every couple years
Thanks for the input from everyone. I think 16" is going to be a great compromise. We are going to go with that. I will post up some pics soon. Thanks again.
My hearth is 1' high that puts my particular stoves ash tray at 23" from floor, legs are 9", works good but I'm not tall
I built a hearth at the cottage a few years back and wished it had been built taller (higher?) Yeah, I was the contractor on that job, too! 16" sounds good!
Our hearth is even with the floor. It makes it easier when I roll the splits in from the porch. Although loading would be easier on a raised hearth. 16" sounds nice
The green and red one brings back wonderful memories from my childhood I'll bet it was the same brand too.
