I answered an early morning Craigslist offer without asking the right question, and of course it turned out to be....green elm! And yes, I had to split some to get it in the car. I hope the Elm God is now appeased.
Nice score. What type of elm is it? I'm still trying to figure out how to distinguish between American, red/slippery, and rock.
Here is a better picture of a cross section. I left this one behind. I don't know what kind it is, maybe the elm experts out there will tell us.
It might be a pain to split but it still burns good and it is free BTU's. That Elm looks like Siberian Elm or American elm. Based on the bark and color of the wood.
American elm. Most times it does split extremely hard because it tears rather than splits. If you can get it split it does make excellent firewood. And Midwinter no doubt now knows why we've preached that when cutting elm to wait until it is dead and the bark off or most of the bark has fell off. Most times it will split nicely then. However, there are still a few pieces that it is best that mother is not near when splitting as she won't appreciate the way you speak to it.
Even with the splitter I'm not a fan of elm but when it's in the stove it burns well. It's like trying to split a hay bale.
Luckily this one is pretty straight grained. But really really wet. The person giving it away gets it from a tree service and makes slab tabletops. I've seen his CL posting before for hardwood, but I've always been too busy to respond. That's why I jumped on it today, cause I had some time. I think he's kinda grouchy though. After I left, he reposted, and said NO CARS, only trucks. You meet all kinds.
You seem to get a lot of wood off Craigslist. All the ads I see are a few sticks for lots of money or you cut down this massive tree hanging over my house and you can keep it, brush and all. Early bird gets the worm I guess
