This tree on my property has been like this for the last 20 years that I know of. It looks like the old grouch of the forest that just won't die. Amazingly it still produces lots of walnuts every year and doesn't appear to be ready for firewood any time soon. I mowed and reseeded the spot I cut by the road and thought I would snap a few pictures.
Long as its producing a decent amount of walnuts (they're cyclical every 3-4 yrs & weather plays a factor also) I see no need to bring it down unless its a hazard.
I still can't believe that a tree could lose all of it's heartwood, and I guess the sapwood too for that matter, and still continue living...prosperous at that. If it was further uphill I could climb inside of it and hide while deer hunting and not need camo. I also didn't realize these pictures were so large...they don't show up like that on my phone and I'm not exactly sure how to resize them
Very resilient! I have a willow on my property that I sawed off at about 6-7' (it's close to our pool). I laid some of the dead wood at the base and forgot about it and @ one time it caught fire from some floating embers from a burn pile. The thing is about 20' high and prospering. Go figure!
That would be an excellent place for a deer blind! Don't know how to resize pictures on the phone but on the computer it is super easy.
