Well hello then neighbor - I'm in the Mansfield area as well, live on the far west side of Ontario!

I dropped my locust logs off this morning to have them milled and the owner mentioned that he has used Catalpa for his own raised beds. Said it works great but I've not run across any around here.

Ha, that is great! Glad to find another local. What mill are you taking them to? Are the pretty reasonably priced? I might have some logs milled myself. I will give ya my details in a PM, but I work in Ontario and drive out past your way every day of the week. Nice area out that way, I am a little north of Mansfield myself, headed toward Ashland. Still only about 10 minutes from you. - Jeff

The mill I use is about 10 minutes west of Galion. Bucyrus address but closer to Galion. I'll know pricing better after i get these locust logs milled. My first go round was old salvaged white oak logs from a cabin I tore down. Tons of metal and lots of labor. Not really a fair assessment as far as pricing but he's willing to take yard trees as he has the equipment to detect metal. If you need the name and number, shoot me a PM.

I've got relatives that live north on 13 off of Eby road. Small world!

Catalpa is a LOT easier to work than White Oak,Osage or Black Locust too.Excellent decay resistance.

Hmmm that's interesting I always thought of it as junk wood. Guess I learned something new.

About the same density as White Pine or Butternut, sometimes a little more. Once in a while you see it for sale as carving blocks.Huge old one across the street from me - easily 4 foot diameter trunk, lost a few limbs back in early '90's late winter ice storm. They let me have the wood, most was fuel for the next winter but I did salvage a few smaller blocks/chunks from the biggest rounds, none over a foot if I remember.Dries fairly rapidly, not much cracking/warping unless there's knots and/or irregular grain.

Someone make me a fair offer on this saw, and I will make it theirs. Need to get rid of some saws, and this one will make someone happier than they thought a chainsaw could make them! It is even nicer than it looks, a real beauty.

I still have it, and think it would be just fine- but is the smaller tail (like for the 540) but same mount pattern. I haven't advertised the bar as of recently, because shipping it would be cost prohibitive for the buyer. It would cost the same to find a used bar and chain as what they would have buying the bar and having it shipped.

Wasn't that a NOS bar? Not a roller nose by any chance is it?

Lol me too, enough that I couldn't let it go. Was originally on a wright c-70, I elongated the oil passage and it lines up perfect. It is an old torrington...

So let's review, if I were to make an offer for the saw and the bar, it would be sans tip? (It's all good but I would be interested in the roller tip bar for sure)

I would rather sell just the power head for sure. I would sell you the hard tip if you really wanted it. It will work, just not the correct mount, but will work fine (I will double check). There are enough used correct bars out there, I would hold out for one, but will leave that up to you. I will work with you the best I can :)

Btw, a large mount stihl bar will work, with the correct bushings over the studs. Very simple, and I can put you in touch with the right guy for them.
The only thing you have to do, is put a hole on the bar for the homelite adjuster pin.

These saws are pretty easy to find parts for, especially in comparison to other saws of the same vintage. That's part of the reason I like them so much :)

Huh. That would be a good way to get it up and running until I locate a proper bar for it.

The only problem is that the Stihl bar wouldn't know what to do with all the oil!
