Measure before you split

Yeah I can imagine it would be.

 

Ok, for all you curious folks, here's pics of my furnace.

 

I now use a stick and a spray can of orange paint; it has to be orange to match the saw. I have a stick cut to length. I start at the end of the log and go along making my little orange marks. Then it is cut cut cut. I tried doing it with the bar but then I would move the saw and get lost on where the cut was to be made.

How much wood you go through annually ?

 

Yep, big & ugly, but it makes heat. Last winter I burned about 8 cord. Cold winter I'll do 10. Beats using LP or even waste oil. Wood furnace is pretty low cost/maintenance compared to other heat, plus it's warm & dries the shop floor quickly. Real bonus when cars drip constantly.

Having to do some trimming of splits myself. What do you all do with the end pieces? Figured I just through them on fire during shoulder season. They accumulate fast.

 

Yep. Toss them in during shoulder season, or use them to maintain a fire through the day before loading up with full sized splits for overnight.

I like finding the posts discussing these fist sized pieces. Makes it for good heat without having to haul large pieces. Like the kind of fire that rolls for a few hours before bed and sets up the coals for you. Guess that's a bit of a comfort food for your stove, especially if the wood is all different kinds.

 

That's the way to do it , sure beats cuttin em one at a time

Some are a little bigger than fist sized

 

I think my Fisher XL will hold a 24" piece.

 

Hahaha I recede on that bit, its the oddballs that really do have that sorta "kibble" effect .

 

Some approximately 3" splits placed NS with space between on the bottom of stove, some more of the same on top of those EW, then pile the kibble on top, starts up and Burns real nice
