That's what I do sometimes instead of trying to split those crotches and end up with a bunch of uglies, if you're splitting by hand those crotches can be a real pain in the butt
I Cut em into square blocks about 5" then they Stack Up real nice, it's a little different takes a little longer than noodlin a straight chunk cuz you have all the cross grain in there

Laying a round on its side and cutting with the grain instead of chips you get long noodle type shavings

Not exactly the same but similar to what we were talking about, and this is kind of a small peace an example I just cut.
I don't know why these pictures turned out sideways
This piece is not stackable the way it is, once I cut the bottom piece off the top piece is now stackable.

Yup, I would just whack away at something like that until it cracked anywhichway. Much too much effort. Before I had the saw, I used to split long pieces like this: IMG_20170906_17786.jpg
then cut them to stove length with the sawzall. Otherwise I would break the sawzall blade cutting something too thick. The saw has made life a lot easier, and there is more to learn!

This is noodling...those long curly shavings are the "noodles" A good running saw with a long bar and a sharp chain will make a huge pile of noodles post haste!

I've just got some nuggets of oak with circular grain to deal with. I've whittled them down to the really impossible stuff with my wedges.
Maybe someday I'll get a splitter. I don't have the garage space right now, after emptying my mom's condo in MA and her house in ME. My husband is after me to make order from chaos, but all I want to do is wood!

I've been splitting rounds for 30+ years with a maul. Anything not splitable, gets noodled.

Do you do your splitting year round, or let it pile up for cool weather?

I guess that depends on how lazy I am. I usually split it after cutting and hauling it. It was not my intentions to leave the wood stacked down at the garden. Wood needs to be split and stack so it dries out faster.
You might want to look for a small electric splitter. They don't take up much room and they can do a really good job of splitting a lot of things. All I have is a little 5 ton electric splitter.

Yeah, something small and electric sounds about my style. I'm not hauling logs out of the woods, I'm just bringing home whatever I can pick up and stuff in my SUV. I do love splitting by hand, though. Just not enough hours in the day.

Here is a post I did on my little electric splitter. I found mine on craigslist. I did think the guy could have come off the price a bit more than he did.
    The little splitter that could

Surprisingly, with a sharp chain in some Norway maple, decent results!
