I've used fence posts, pine trees, T-posts and U-posts, cribbing, stacking between live trees, piles with tarps and pallets with pallet bookends and pallets with bookends are fairly easy and neat. They all work except piles under tarps work least well for seasoning. I like double rows on pallets because I can cover them fairly easy with corrugated metal, fiberglass and PC panels which I have laying around.
When I first started with stacking wood, I had it stacked on the worst side possible for around our house. I ended up moving all that wood to the east side of our house which gets a ton of wind (from the west) and real good sun. I don't bother cribbing the ends but that's just my preference, the stacking always gets easier even though it can be hard on your frame. The cribbing looks great but when we're burning wood, I don't think about how it's stacked. Nice work Zap
Second one filled. I have a choice now. Dismantle my last cribbed stack (which has held strong for a year) or not. I'm voting yes. If I dump that wood, I can get 2 more of these 10' rows in there in the same direction before my property line ends. I'm sure I can fill a third one and then would have a 4th for incoming wood. That big stack on the right is just about a cord. 12'+ long, 3' wide (my 18" splits) and 4' high. The next one is about 0.83 cord. 10' long, 32" wide (16" splits) and 4' high.
Thanks guys! Alright, that last cribbed stack was dumped and is now in the 3rd row (3rd from right). I got a brand new pickup of ash and cherry and started stacking that in the 4th row (4th from right). What do you guys do with short splits and uglies? Just save them for the top of the stacks? These short splits cannot be cut into kindling (American Elm).
I see nothing wrong with your stacking plan. As long as it works for you that's great. Shorts and uglies just get tossed on top of the piles, unless you have a separate crate/tote/cage for them. Some people use IBC tote cages, others build them out of old pallets, fence wire, whatever you have. The idea is simply a pallet-sized box.
Like Jon_E said , many different ways to deal with Shorts and uglies I use these crates I got free , you can build something like them out of pallets. Here is another idea Finally an uglies box
FWIW, I just sharpened some 2x4's and drove them into the ground...made one big 4 or 5 row pile....threw a couple of ratchet straps around the whole thing, posts and all. Now theres a big yellow line around my whole pile, but hey, sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do. If it doesnt fall over....WIN ! LOL.
Although the worst of the uglies get thrown on top, we still stack a goodly amount of shorts and uglies right into the stack; we just don't stack a lot of them together else then the stack will become weak.
Those uglies usually burn the longest and hottest...denser wood. People that just firepit 'em are missin out...
If I didn't keep the uglies I would have a true wood problem. I just stack and hope they don't fall over, happens from time to time. They burn well and the neighbors are ok with it.
What? "just firewood"????? We're going to have to have a sit down....you and me! Just firewood........
