Done cutting !!! Next years pile of birch is complete !!! Im finally a year ahead !!! I think Im going to redo the pile though. That plywood and dead weight to hold it down is pretty ghetto for the city subdivision Im in. Im thinking a peak in the middle and cover it with a tarp.
No sense in stopping now, we preach the 3 year rule around here. But having next years done now is defiantly a good thing though.
I got 22 acres and 3 acres for processing and storing I'll help any member out! I do not deliver or pick up though
I've already got a wood "shed" It's one of those 8'x8' steel pole tent things. Bigger ones are called a portable garage. It's packed front to back with this years wood. What I wouldn't do to be able to build a proper wood shed. Unfortunately, my Mrs won't go for it. Some nonsense about us needing a new deck before I build anything else. LOL. I'd also love to keep cutting...but the yard just isn't big enough. I'd love to move out of the city, but we have 3 special needs kids. The availability of programs and services for them drops pretty much to zero once my official residence is outside city limits. Nope...I'll be here for a lot of years yet, so I just keep making the best of what I have available.
You do what you can and what you must blacksmithden ......you have a true Father's heart it sounds to me...
Yes, peak it in the center but you don't need a big peak; just so the water runs off. To hold down the tarp, because of where you live, it might be good to think about a couple strings of rope tied to some bricks or gallon milk jugs filled with sand for weights. That would hold the tarp on the wood.
Thats kind of what I had in mind Backwoods. Surprisingly, we dont get much wind here in Edmonton considering we're western prairie. Still...when it decides to blow, things can get pretty crazy. I cleaned up the garage last week in preparation for my new wood stove moving through there and found out I have an abundant supply of bungie cords. Ill probably just wack a few wood screws into a few of the lower pieces in the pile and hook onto those. All that being said...I picked up the new wood stove and blower today. Its the Timber Ridge version of the England's 30NC. Got a great price on the display model. I bought 6 ft of pipe to stuff in it so I could do the initial burn / paint cure / smoke off, right in the back yard before bringing it into the house. Thank goodness I did. There was more smoke coming off the top of the stove than out the pipe for a good 20 minutes. Its been out there burning for about 8 hours now. Ill load it up one more time in the morning and bring it in tomorrow night after work. Things are coming together nicely for this years burning season. Its got to be better than my smoke generating Ardent Energy Aurora that my neighbors have grown to hate.
Even when I say I'm done for the year, if something nice comes up that I just can't pass, well..... Never really done! I remember one year not so long ago, out while truck showed -22 on the thermometer scrounging wood in a "too good" to last spot. I had to keep the saw on the floor of the truck to give it some heat so it would start easier that day! As it turns out, that spring I got back out to the same general area and found an even better spot! Got a whole winter's worth of firewood for ourselves and another residence by the end of June that year!
Welcome to the club blacksmithden nice to meet you. You'll like it here! Keep on splitting and stacking! :stacke: You can never have to much wood!
Im the same way with my gathering. I could still put some of that bone dry pine in the basement if I had to. The Mrs wouldnt be to happy, but Ive found they seldom are. Lol. When we go out shooting, I usually bring my saw. You never know when you'll stumble across a "tree of opportunity".
That is surprising that you don't have wind most of the time there. Unfortunately I've been to your area only one time but do hope to come back one of these days if the Good Lord is willing and the creeks don't rise.
Welcome aboard blacksmithden ! Sorry I forgot to mention it in the above post.... True that about packing the saw when you are into the woods; don't want any missed opportunities!
