Not so much for me, but other members who may not be so well versed in the #'..... i.e., what is the difference between a 30-06 & a 30-08.... that kinda stuff, but not limited to. I have some heat here at the house, but there are bound to be some FHC folks that maybe want to get into chootin' and this would be a great spot to "break it down."
in pracial terms not much.. around ww2 the allies wanted a standard bullet.. older US general wanted 30-06 for long range and knockdown power.. British wanted updated nato round 30 calibre which 7.62 . Short version US agreed and didn't live up to bargain.. in olden days 50 years ago 30-06 could hold more powder therefore longer range.. with advent on modern propellants the 308 is shorter lighter with very slight better accuracy. so in a bolt action rifle almost half inch shorter quicker reloads slightly less weight it's smaller advantage in military for what's it's worth.. they still have long distance 1000 yards iron sights competitions.. my uncle won it a few years ago.. if you can hit a 12 inch pie plate at 3000 feet with iron sights (in 30-06) it's a highly sophisticated weapon and what your shooting at is having a bad day
Savage 10T-SR 6.5 Creedmoor topped with a Vortex Razor Gen 2 4.5-27. Target from where we were shooting from the last outing. 670 yards.
Interesting that part of the history was unknown to me. Now, for the take I grew up hearing- The "ott" 6 or 8 so named after the year they were originally manufactured...1906 & 1908 Not saying that's factual, just one of those potentially alternative facts I've always heard. Please, correct that info for me if I've been led astray!
oh the difference between 308 and 7.62 nato round is same as above meaning not much although depending on where you live price
yup was typing fast.. 30-06 was in 1906 hence it's wide use in ww1 and why old generals were reluctant to give it up in 1952.. or almost 50 years later..
Some of the Bipods on amazon have good reviews. Some say they are as good as a $200 bipod. I added the optic. I think it should be good enough for what I am going to do with it. I may hunt with it this fall. Next year I am going to join a pistol range. They have a 100 yard rifle range. We also have another range that is 400 yards but they charge $25 a day so I may go there once in a while. I need to get a scope for my AR now. I was looking at that one. I may get it.
Here's a fun little rifle, the ever loved/hated H&R Handi rifle. Chambered in 357 magnum, wearing a 2-7x33 Redfield. I had some left over target wadcutters, so I loaded them long in 38 Special cases. Not exactly a tack driver with these loads, but holds about 1.25-1.5" at 30 meters so good enough for skunks or porkies out to 50-60 meters. I have some 158 grain gas check SWC style bullets that I'd like to load for a short range deer cartridge, but haven't had much luck yet.
The only issue(and to me a big issue) I've encountered with the bipods without locking screws to adjust the height, is they don't lock. They move shot to shot(which gets annoying)When loading the bipods they also get weable wobbly due to the legs and mount itself. That's why using it at it's lowest setting or bottomed out isn't as much of an issue. But the legs still drop and goes unlevel. The issue arises when trying to level out when shooting on an uneven surface and one leg won't hold locked in place. Most shooters lack the knowladge or skill to give the cheapies a bad review.
I've had a lot of them. If I do my part it's a half MOA gun at any distance I've shot. The Harris notch leg with the swivel top is the most versatile bipod in the budget class. An Atlas would be nice but they're $300
I'll play since I've got one outta the safe currently. Savage fv-sr. 22lr Leuopold vx1 3-9x40 Aftermarket cheek rest for proper cheek weld. Threaded for when I get a rimfire can Absolute tackdriver.
I like to do alot of long range hunting my winchester model 70 in a .300 Weatherby mag wears a 9" to 13" Harris bi-pod ($100) for the prone position and for sitting or standing I have the Primos mono-pod ($50 at Wal-Mart). Both work extremely well! My Harris bi-pod has larger knobs that you can really tighten it down on the legs and gun!
My bipod came today. It also has an adapter for a rail. This the one I got. I went with it because the rail adapter. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E4YVCOA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
