Working through my Wood Fairy's drop and came across a log of this. It was very very yellow and didn't have much odor at all. On one sniff I thought it smelled like pizz. Some sniffs nothing and one other had a very slight pine smell. It split pretty straight. Any ideas?
Could be. Mulberry is common in our area. I just have not ran into wood this yellow. We will see what other opinions are.
Went out and dug through my rounds. The log did not have much bark on it. I believe this is a round from the same log. I believe is the quanifying statement. Best bark and an end grain shot.
My vote is black locust. Especially with the bark peeling off like that and it being so rough. Mulberry bark looks a lot more like ash or box elder bark. Much finer and smoother ridges. I'm guessing that chunk is pretty heavy, although mulberry is hefty too. I have both species in my wood pile and I could tell the difference by smell, but this ain't a scratch-n-sniff computer.
The bigger the mulberry the courser the grain. That's not out of line for a trunk of a big ol mulberry. Looks too yellow, not enough gold for fresh locust.
After Joe_E suggested Black Locus I did some research and don't think it is. I stumbled across this picture of Osage Orange splits. Looks pretty close. Can we rule out Osage Orange?
I cut and split a few logs upon leaving my parents for a few items. This is Black Locust, its yellow but its pale., in fact mine will go from yellow to a golden orange after a day or two in the sun.
