Catapillar ID

I was splitting some red oak this evening and found this inside of a split. Anyone know what kind of flying critter this turns into? It was about 2.5-3" long and about 1/2" diameter. This pic was after my dog chewed and rolled on it a bit.

 

That's no caterpillar. It's a grub of some sort.

Most likely a beetle larvae.

 

I think you're right, it's more of a grub. I don't know what it turns into.

 

Its a red oak borer. I see them in a lot of red oak here in Missouri. I feed them to my neighbors box turtles and ducks.

in a log laying for a while ?

As for the grub...yup, seen lots of them...dunno what they turn into...except BTUs if they hang around too long

That would be the one Brad M. Very rarely have I seen one of those fully grown.

 

And here is just an example of grub!

 

If you put it on a hook it would be fish grub. Going fishing!
