I like a good old fashioned logger's tape. The Mingo Marker looks good/simple too.

Cool idea. Another one I use (which i can get a picture of if needed), is where I took a piece of 1x1 oak lumber and cut it to 28 inches. I put two deck screws on each end, 24 inches apart. I set the first screw on the end, and scribe the 24 inch mark with the other screw. I chase it down the entire tree. No paint, nothing falling off of the blade etc. This works for me, but if this works for you I say:dex:

WOW! This is my first stop into this thread.

I've never used anything to mark off the length. I just run down the log and cut. Consequently, I tend to spend time in the garage with the electric chainsaw cutting off the ends of the ones that are a wee bit long. :emb: I pile them up off to the side until I have 10-15 then cut them all at once.

My stove will take 21 inches, so I eyeball to 18 inches, and all is fine.

I use my arm! Distance from my elbow to the knuckles of my closed fist is a hair more than 16".
Works for me, and I always have it with me.!

Because I scrounge mostly just logs I came up with an idea on a construction tape. 16” is already marked in red. I marked every 17” increment in green and 18” in blue.
Now just pull the tape on the log and it instantly shows with size will give the smallest cookie or none at all. Sometimes you get fancy and cut six 16”s and two 18”s to eliminate cookies. Problem with construction tapes is they don’t grip a log well. Could screw a longer hook on it. I know one member here did.
Went and bought one of those reel tapes with a longer folding hook. Tossed it in the truck for the next time I was grabbing logs. Never got around to putting the extra marks on it. Had been thinking of going straight 16 in case I sell wood. That day came and I ripped it out of the plastic and rediscovered after years of not using one there’s no 16” marks LOL. Easy enough to fix but I still have t done it.

Yeah I’m seeing that. And I did it!! Not sure how this popped up in the front row?? Did I have a window open for four years? LOL

I think I took a trip and got lost in a link from another thread. Must be nap time.

Amazing the lengths taken to measure firewood on this thread.
