Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I've been paying attention, so here are the pics of my stacks ( I hope).
That's some fine firewood you got loaded up there. Can you point out what's likely to be burned this year if any? Kudos on the firewood chase you and Mwalsh9152! That'll pay off in dividends if you guys find scores to pair up with!
Nice pics!! I especially like the cribbing next to the pool with what looks like an entire tree. Keep it up!!
Welcome Midwintet, and good score! There's an ever growing contingent of FHC members here in New England. I've learned a lot hanging around here. How much wood do you go through? Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
I need about 3 cords for winter. What's in the woodshed pic is what I will burn, and it's not enough. I'm hoping to supplement it with the racks in front of the shed. The wood is from my neighbor's unwanted woodpile, which has been sitting unsplit and uncovered for several years. No carpenter ants yet, but quite a variety of beetles, grubs, and wasps. I'm slowly getting it debarked, cut, and split. I have a lot of split oak (long side along the pool), all split this spring. Some of it was pretty dry when I got it at the dump, some maybe I can dip into that. The stacks on the short side of the pool are red maple split this summer, and nowhere near ready. The square pile with house siding in the background is more red maple. The big pale colored unsplit pile is old oak. I'm hoping to build a big square oak pile that I can leave sit for a few years. So, I'm a little pinched for this winter's supply, but all set for 2018/2019. Oh well.
The monster crib is from two tall oak rounds that I had to wedge split at a Craigslist score, to get into my car. More wedge work needed to get them in my stove, but they're happy for now.
Welcome to the site Midwinter ! You have quite a nice stash of wood there!:stacke::stacke: Keep on hoarding.
Several reasons. 1.Wood dries faster. 2. Wood takes up less space. 3. Less wood dirt in the house. 4. Interrupts the life cycle of all the borers and beetles. 5. I find it relaxing, sitting in the shade with a hammer and chisel and chipping away.
I'm back in Lowell. Less fun today, it's hotter. This is what two rounds looks like in my car. One more and I'm out of here!
I'm still working up the ambition to pull the load out from last night and stack it. Maybe once it cools down some!
Welcome to da club Midwinter To bad they cut that oak up into those fat cookies What kinda stove ya running ?
I saw what you meant about the rounds not worth taking, crotches and branches cut off and gnarly ones....Homeowner still super nice though, so I'll probably go back when it cools down.
That oak was solid, no center rot or ants, but it must have scared the homeowner, being close to the house. It must have been magnificent. We have a Jotul, I don't know what model, but it is 24 inches wide. It is in the basement, and has this big hood over it that funnels hot air to a register in the floor upstairs. The hood was here when we bought the house, along with a Fisher stove, which we used for a long time. I like the Jotul better!
Rav4, huh? Tell me about it as i am kinda considering one to purchase. What year, engine size, mpg, pros and cons...how many miles (trouble free?)
I love my RAV4! It is a 2014 XLE, which was the model I had to buy to get heated seats and a sunroof. It has 4 cylinder engine, which is all I can tell you, I'm not a motorhead. I don't keep track of the MPG either, I could prob get better mileage, but I'm addicted to the sport mode (little button on the dash, lowers the gear). I bought it as a commuter car, I was driving to and from Boston nearly every day when my mother was still living in her own place. Now it's my wood mobile. I have 74K miles on it, no repairs needed yet except lots of new tires from picking up nails at the dump!
