here in england we have 3 types of snakes, the smooth snake, the grass snake, and the {adder} that can kill you.,now we have another one they have found.and thats another type of grass snake.i cant stand any of them.but its an offence to kill any of them.
Around here we are lucky not to have any poisonous snakes. Well, technically there are a couple of very small populations of rattlers, but they are in unpopulated areas and their locations are kept secret by fish and game so the dumb people don't go and bother them. 99.99% of the time, if it rattles around here it is a milk snake (who is harmless but imitates). Garter snakes are also very common here. I have always let snakes do their thing - they eat bugs when young and rodents when they get bigger, which is all good for me.
Funny you should talk about snakes...Sunday night I went to the basement and saw what looked like a shoelace on the floor, but was a little Northern Ringneck. This is unusual, as there is no outside egress to the cellar except for the sump pump drain line that pumps the utility sink water out. Even the windows are GlassBlock, so this little guy had to do some work to get in, and at least a couple of seconds under water! Anyway, had to chase the cats away, then try to capture him. I am no good anymore at just grabbing them behind the head, so I got him under a bucket--it was a panic to keep my two cats from wanting to play, but eventually got a piece of cardboard underneath, and took the little guy outside. Last time I saw one of these (they are always babies), it was caught in a spiderweb under the rocking chair outside. Next door had a Blacksnake resting in his carport--his wife was ready to move. We could not convince her that it was harmless. Funny, in this state, there are only two poisonous snakes--the Timber Rattler, which lives in the western part in the mountains, and the Copperhead--which everybody thinks whatever snake they happen to see is. Snakes are welcome on my property, as long as they are outside!
Snakes are good! I only take offense when they invade my personal space (house, sheds, vehicles, etc).
Snakes are bad, I'll usually go out of my way to kill one every time I need to. My wife, daughters, grandchildren, mom and dad all Don't like snakes so it's just a matter of keeping safe as with the fish pond, Creek, low lying spring fed areas, and plenty rain has cotton mouth water mocasin at my doors. Ground rattlers and lately unlike the past. Copperheads have started showing up. I found one in a power pole for a RV laying in the breaker box, I thought it was a small exotic type cuz of the color. Turns out copperhead. One bit my neighbors dog in the face dog gone never seen again. Farms of different types in the immediate area kills snakes regularly. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk
This!^^ This was my last relocation, found on my wood pile in my basement. It went in a bucket, then for a drive. Snakes really aren't that hard to catch/contain. A stick behind the head then pick it up. I find most that hate 'em are scared of 'em. Of course, there's no spitting cobras in my neck of the woods...
I'd rather see a snake around than mice. Just my humble opinion! The Wood Wolverine , that is a good size critter! Was it a Garter Snake?
Yep. We used to get about 4/5 every year. Never found a preventive measure to keep them out. One year my wife stumbled on what she called 20/30 having a get together (lol). Must be a den on our property. Had a pair of blackies that were 5/6' once. They too went for a ride.
You have to understand that snakes (except maybe a movie sized constrictor) are not out to harm humans. We are not a food source for them. Snakes are not inherently evil. They go where the food is. Sometimes that food is in/around the same places I am. Since they eat rodents and bugs mostly, I welcome them to clean out my woodpiles and brush. Rather have a snake in the woodpile than a mouse chewing the wires on my tractor. Two varieties that are poisonous here: Timber Rattler and Copperhead. I have been in and around the woods most of my life and have never laid eyes on a copperhead or rattler (thankfully). Garters, ringnecks, watersnakes (water moccasins! lol) and blacks have been all that I have encountered. Again, as long as not in my "personal spaces" they are left alone or relocated back in the woods a bit.
My one dog is a snaker he got 4 in a row pulling tarps off my milled board stacks.(3 foot garters) one was pregnant and babies went flying everywhere!(yes some species of snakes give live birth) Snakes have their place, just not around the house. They eat our koi fish babies, along with frogs and toads that eat more bugs than snakes. Transporting wild animals here in my state is a crime. Belove it or not People have actually tattled for it
