Why insulate the chase? Class A pipe will work just fine directly exposed to the weather, you have it in a chase so even better...if you are stuck on insulating the chase, maybe some metal roofing to cover the insulation? Or 3/8" drywall? I wouldn't get to carried away with it personally...and I'm pretty picky about things generally, so....
My MIl/FIL just built a new house...I didn't insulate the chase...I did order the optional insulation wrap for inside the ceiling box though (Supervent)

If I were going to insulator the chase I would use Roxul

The consensus seems to be that the super efficient cat stoves run much cooler flue temps, and as a result benefit from an insulated chase. It's a drop in the bucket, budget-wise, when compared to the rest of the project, so I figure why not. Roxul is a good idea too...I may go that route.

I think the insulation is unnecessary with the triple walled pipe inside the chase as long as the chase is air sealed relatively well. Of course you want to make sure that there are no issues with trapped moisture should warmer air from the house infiltrate into the chase and result in condensation. I'm a fourth who would go with Roxul if I was to insulate that job. I could see where Sheetrock could be required if the clearance from the pipe was less than a certain distance to the wood framing. It's not the daily use that you are worried about. It's the remote chance of a chimney fire that would heat things up nicely and pose the most risk. Make sure you check the code for insurance purposes. Progress looks good.

Sheetrock is not required. You must maintain the required 2" clearance though. You could use osb instead of sheetrock if you're afraid the insulation will fall in. The chimney will perform better with an insulated chase.

Just curious but what type of chimney pipe are you using Rangerbait? Is it insulated double wall ie. ICC Excel or air-cooled triple wall?

Could staple up some chicken wire to help make sure the Roxul stays in place too...

Question: I am in the process of hunting down some vinyl siding pieces to wrap the new chase...the stuff I'm trying to match is Certainteed Encore D4 1/2 Dutchlap...if I find D4 1/2 Dutchlap from another manufacturer, are they generally compatible, or do I need to go with the exact same mfg?

Depends on if you want a 5' or a 50' match.
Even with going back to the same manufacturer it very well might not match perfectly due to fading...its surprising how fast it fades...becomes evident only after a new piece is put up right next to it...might be good enough if it is not too old though. One thing that will help is that you are not trying to match directly on the same wall (same plane) even though the chase is connected to the wall and the siding will be side by side, this will still easier to match (at least close enough) than a "same wall" situation...if that makes sense? (like replacing one broken piece)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too...I don't think a slight mismatch will make that much of a difference.

If you want the best color match you should go with the same thing same manufacturer, anything else could be a really bad color match

Awesome...confirmed a local source of supply has 281 pieces of the same crap in stock!

You know, I was kinda turned off at the idea of vinyl siding when I learned this house had it, but it really is a great system.

Vinyl can either be really plain and boring, or actually look halfway decent. My inlaws spent a bit more on nicer vinyl and their house definitely looks nicer than others near it just because of the shape of the siding.

It's really feeling like fall here the past few days, and it's all 70s and low 80s in the 15-day...here's to hoping the wood stove is needed soon!
