Strong winds blew this linden (basswood) right into the water. Most of the canopy is underwater, laying against the bottom.
    IMG_0117.JPG
The pics don't show it, but the main trunk above the tipped rootball lays on the bottom all the way along.

I can cut away the limbs above water and winch them on shore, but have no clue how to get the rest of the (now underwater) limbs and trunk out of there. It is ~ 20" DBH and the tree was maybe 35' tall. Looking for ideas how to get the underwater part out of the lake. Pretty sure my MS290 won't operate underwater.....

Can't you do the same with the trunk once the limbs are off? Maybe section it a bit to relieve some weight.

Happens all the time on tv, but I've never tried it. I think I'd strip the saw and dry/oil the heck out of it afterwards. I've cut through a lot of snow and ice, and had water thrown around from melting, but never actually submerged the bar in liquid water.

Cut plenty of pretty wet wood, and in snow/ice. Full on water cutting.............hmmmm.

Yeah, just dry it off good then re lube, and run it a little on dry land matey! Arrrr! Ya land lubber!

I've used my 029s like this many times. Cutting trees that landed in the river or the lake.
Just winch up the branches as you get them into more manageable sized pieces.

Do you have a jon boat, or raft, etc, to cut from?

Basswood is very light, can you pull sections out with your truck or tractor?

    +1

Not being able to see what you're cutting. I'd feel around and if the trunk isn't in the mud and the bar wouldn't be there I'd cut in the water.
But you'll still need to put a rope cable on it to winch/pull it onto dry land and/or stop it from floating away on ya.
You might be able to winch/pull it now and twist the stump around in the mud. Then work on it.
That's what I'd try first if you haven't already.

Being careful/wary of spring loads of course.

It's light when dried. However green, and worse, green and submerged, won't help. At least the wood will want to float, that will help getting it out of the water.

Yup, have a raft to stand on (probably temporarily lash it to the stable submerged trunk) for cutting. All good ideas & answers. Thank you.

Can you cut in the water? Let's ask Barcroftb if it can be done.

On the bass, I'd cut the limbs that can be cut then cut the trunk where you won't hit the bottom of the creek. Then you should be able to stand the root ball upright. Hopefully you have a tractor rather than a winch for getting that out as it will make it quicker and easier. However, when all else fails, a winch can do the job. Just don't let the winch overheat. Give it lots of rest to cool off rather than burn it up.

I've done plenty of clean-ups like this. I agree with Sav cut what limbs you can off the tree. Then cut it free of the root ball and pull it out with cable or, better yet, rope. I will say this use a wedge in the top of the cut to prevent pinching the bar. Since the water makes it hard to tell where the tension is in the trunk.

A tractor or 4x4 truck should get it most of the way out of the water. Cut what you get on land off. Rinse and repeat. No real need to cut under water much other than to free it from the root ball.

Just like everyone else has said no issues running a saw balls deep in the water. This is one situation where a dirty saw is a plus. There will be surprisingly little water on it when done. pizz rev it a bit when your done and follow normal cleaning procedure and it should be just fine.

I've cut in the brook before with the bar in the water, it didn't seem that it hurt it.

For someone to take a propeller out? I can't do that to anyone.

It's good burning wood though. Yes, it burns fast, but it burns good.

Of course not! Just showing my disdain for it is all.

Yeah, I also have burnt it both in the indoor stove but mostly in the OWB. Probably sold most of it as campfire wood though!
