I have mostly gotten delivered wood either cut and split or log length. Now that I have 6 acres to try to manage, I am cutting the dead standing trees to start. I take anything down to three inch diameter. My buddy calls them pecker poles!
I take the same as you. I just hate like hell to waste any , I like the small stuff for smaller fires or even if it's just to fill some crevices between the bigger splits or even for the fire pit
Honestly, the only stuff I keep that small is the high btu stuff. It's wasteful, as I leave a lot of tops lay but I do try to use the small stuff for smoker wood though.
I take down to 2", sometimes even smaller if it is straight with few/no branches to trim...if the small stuff is much work at all to trim up, its gone. I like having a variety of sizes to pick from when loading.
I try to go down to two or three inches. I jam them in between the 12 inch rounds, and start the morning fire with the small stuff. I get less picky when I have a lot down, but it all burns!
Those sleds have so many uses. i keep one without holes for ice fishing to keep the gear dry. Eventually they wear a hole then I use them like you. Hauled deer to rocks.
Same here. I take down to 2" diameter. I also like large splits, so I can pack the stove and post on the "stove Tetris" thread.
Same here, I burn a bunch of the small stuff in shoulder season for an hour or two to take out the chill in the morning.
I like the smaller trees you don't have to split them and they burn a little hotter and longer not split. Don't get me wrong I'll cut just about anything size wise but I do like the smaller rounds.
It all depends. Many times we will take the real small stuff and more so when my wife is with me. However, it does take more time to collect a lot of firewood if you are taking the small stuff. In addition, at present we have a lot of wood going to waste because of the EAB so why should I spend time getting the really small stuff when lots will go to waste anyway. I'd rather spend the time getting the bigger wood while it is still worth getting. In time we'll probably go back to getting the smaller stuff but right now unless it is oak, we don't get the 2-3" branches; just leave them in the woods.
When I cutting in my brother's woods, I cut quite small-more for the aspect of cleaning up the woods than for the wood value. "Pecker poles" do take up a lot of time for the amount of wood you get from them.
