We are so high that everything looks like hills, but yes, most are very steep. Although the mountains are shorter than out west, the elevation gain mirrors the mountains out west. The alpine zone is the same as out your way. A very delicate ecosystem, and exposed. We were 3 hiking miles from the mountain with the worst weather in America, which we'll summit another time.

The first hike ever in 2008 in this region for us. A slick climb up the falling waters trail.

As for the difference in the mountains east vs west the comments from people who race in RAAM tells much. Yes, the mountains in the east are shorter for climbing but almost all are steeper and it just seems there is one after another whereas out west the climbs are longer but spaced further apart and not so steep...at least mostly. There are still some very steep areas out west too. But the RAAM racers all seem to prefer the western mountains overall...except for the cold when you get up high. I remember one time when crewing for a racer and we headed up on Wolf Creek Pass and ran into a blizzard...in June.

    Beautiful pictures, great terrain!
I had Val look at the pics. above tree-line, asked her how high up did she think you were. She wasn't even close.
Honestly, I wouldn't have been close either, looks like 11K here.

I did think something like that, but only because of the elevation. That looked like a bit of a climb so not taking anything away from the effort. That's work, dependent on where you're acclimated, elevation wise. I'm impressed.

I find the downhill to be more hard on the body. Especally with noodle legs from getting to the top

My knees don't like going downhill so I have to go down sort of sideways. And yes, they are sort of noodling from going uphill.

Great pictures! I've always said that Caps Ridge is where hiking meets climbing. Love NH.

What great pictures you took of such a beautiful area Well Seasoned. It's wonderful that so many others get to see the magnificiant scenery that is NH. I was 2 or 3 miles away from the top of Mt. Jefferson the prior day, We went to the Cog RR base station which is @ 2700 feet and kind of in the ravine next to where you were. We drove by looking up at the presidential ridge Sunday on our home thru Crawford Notch. I was literally looking right at you, you should have waved. :binoculars:

Here is a pic of Barb 31 years ago on the trail up to Tuckerman Ravine on the other side of Mt. Washington. Not far from where you were. DSCN1626.JPG
