My dad bought a new Stihl in the early 70's. My memory says it was an 018 maybe AV. Did they make such a saw or is my memory getting old? I have not seen any reference to this saw nor can I find any reference.
No sir, not back then, likely an 028AV as the 018 wasn't hatched until the late 90s. The 028 was hatched in the 70s. Could also be an 015 I suppose.
Thank you. I had 018 stuck in my brain. It was a light trim saw and I believe a 14" bar. Cut like mad, but we later had problems with it. I gave it back to dad. I have all of dad's tools, after he passed, but not the saw. I have searched mom's house and can't find it.
Sounds a lot like the 015's MO. Great running saws when they ran. Hard to find parts for these days and have been replaced with better, lighter machines. Scotty Overkill had quite a bit of experience with them.
Parts for 015s are among some of the easiest to find, dirt cheap as well. Craigslist all over the US is littered with $40-$75 running 015s, and eBay has any part you could ever want.
I was thinking the same thing. Sure you might not walk into stihl for that handle you busted or random linkage. But ebay is filled with ones parted out and you can post on the forum and I am sure there are plenty of guys with some in their hoard piles
I should be clear here.... NOS and dealer supplied new OEM parts are either lucky finds or prohibitively expensive these days....
I tend to take the eBay/forum parts market for granted as I had so much background behind a dealership parts counter.....
It's like saying parts are hard to find for an 028, 031, 041. Simply isn't the case. I just don't want someone to read something and not buy a saw they might be interested in based on someone saying parts are hard to find. Outside of ignitions, they are some of the easiest parts to find period.
Ignitions is one part, that doesn't make "parts" hard to find, even at that, ignitions are cheap as well, you can buy the whole saw running for $40.
I need an ignition for an older saw. Yet to find one as cheap as I want to spend. I dont even remember what it is now!! Haha. I was thinking 028 but I think it's bigger than that? I need to go open the saw box and look?
