What is the best way to dispose of old chains? Can they be recycled along with your cans and plastic and newspapers or should they be thrown in the garbage?

Are there steel recyclers near you? They won't give you much if anything but it beats having them in the landfill.

Goes right in the recycle bin. Ultimately any residual sawdust or oil gets burned off in the recycling process anyway, so no worries.

Just save them along with any steel or copper you have. When it accumulates, take to the junk yard and get a few dollars from it.

I run them down to one of the local saw shops . They have a bin for mower blades ,saw chain ,etc.
it gets sent to be recycled .

If you know someone who does blacksmithing you could throw them their way and they could forge weld them into knives!:dex: I have old chains laying around as well but no time to forge weld them to make knives. I think that may be my retirement project?  Yeah right I'll probably be too busy with a honey due list!:doh:

I take mine to my buddy that has a small engine shop. They collect chains, mower blades, etc. and take them to the scrapyard at Christmas. I help the mfl drink up the proceeds.

That would be fine if her honey due list included the line item "forge weld old chainsaw chains into knives."

I put them in my scrap steel bucket or pile. Yes if you live in a city or recycle and don't haul your own you can put them in your bin or the scrap steel bin.

As a newbee to sharpening chains, when do you know a chain is ready to be retired?

Also there is usually a little line on top of the cutter that assists you in the sharpening angle. When that line disappears thats when the chain should too!

Ah just run it till you start knocking teeth off. Even just one or two loosing is ok for a more rough use able chain
