Stihl 064 with 36" bar for $300. Seller says it has a cracked gas tank which has been repaired with JB Weld. Trying to figure out if replacements available from China will fit. This says it does, but I've found conflicting info.

Can anyone shed light for me on the compatibility of parts for 064/066 etc.?

Will the tank fit and work? Yes, however, the carb box on that tank is wider than one on a 064, so you will also need a 066 flat top air filter cover. That entire tank assembly is about 3/8" wider than an original 064 tank. I would buy a used OEM tank if it were me. Decent used 064 tanks are getting pricey.

So, if I were to buy a complete set, like this, I'd be in business?

Edit: Oh, wait. I see you said flat top. Is that the early 066 I've seen mentioned?

I like the 064, kinda want one. Lots of them were used and abused in the northern cali, and pnw woods in the 90 s and early zeros. Seems difficult to find one thats not thrashed. If you get it i hope it works out for you.

It was previously owned by a faller, but doesn't look too bad. I'll probably go look at it tomorrow.

Hey that looks alright for a old saw, much cleaner and less battle worn than alot of them. 300$ is probly alright if it runs good.

Yes, flat top is the early 066. I see those AM tanks advertised a lot of times that say they will fit 064, and early 066. As far as I know there is not an aftermarket tank that is the correct width for the 064. Also, even if you buy the af cover to fit that style tank, now your af cover is wider than your cylinder shroud. Hence, why I would buy a used OEM tank. I would suggest you buy the saw, then put an ad in the classifieds on here for a used tank.

Looking at those pictures, it appears the cylinder shroud is cracked and been repaired with jb weld right above the recoil handle also. The clutch cover has a chunk missing out of it right by the rubber deflector in the rear, and it's missing the carb adjustment grommet. If you want the saw to be correct, those parts aren't extremely rare, but they aren't cheap. It does have a 3/4 wrap, so you want to make sure it has the correct brake handle. If it doesn't have the correct brake handle it will hit the wrap handle before it disengages the brake. All in all, it's not a great deal, but it's a fair deal. Just keep in mind, if you pay $300 for the saw, you'll likely wind up with $500 in it before you're done if you want to fix everything on it. There may be something nicer out there for the $500??

Agreed with the above. I'll be fitting up an 064 case to 660 plastics this summer. You're right that you'd have to go full 660 on everything to make it work. Even then, there may be some funky looking spots.
If you do this, you may need to change the intake boot as well.

If he lets you: 1. Pull the muffler. 2. Pull the clutch drum and give that crank a good wiggle. Any movement and the price just went down to half asking.

They're great saws. I've built two and have another in parts. There's decent AM support but some pieces aren't compatible with 660 stuff.

Clutch covers are decent in AM. That tank could be plastic welded if you know anyone... you could also do an improved jb job on it.

That bar/chain is worth some money.

Thank you! That's exactly the kind of input I was looking for. I can get blinded by a "good deal". I will probably pass.
