I think it's fantastic Jack Straw a fellow hoarder is married to a woman with a last name that when enunciated with an accent sound like firewood., how appropriate is that? many congratulations sir!

 

Well her name used to be Kerry Youngwood but she's too old for that!

Today we had our first real assault on garden weeding, well she did anyway, me and a boy helped the in laws with the pool furniture and cabana tarp/roof and I got a little time to harvest.
I did a little scouting for my next harvest and came across this oak with rot streak up the trunk. It still putting out leaves on branches, so it's not quite dead, but heading that way. My question is; do I take it now in June while it's loaded with sap or should I wait until late fall when it moisture content is down?

 

Well, I hope we make it as long as you have!

 

I'd wait until it was cooler. My wife just came back from MA and said the ticks were terrible!

 

I've been pretty lucky with the ticks so far this summer. I seem to carry more home in the spring and the fall.
I'm definitely a fan of cutting in the colder weather if for no other reason the comfort of it. Not to mention the wood isn't as heavy and the branches are easier to manage without the leaves. But I'll carry ticks home in January. Just always have to be checking for them.

I hope others chirp in but what gramps taught me to do was girdle the tree... realize man cut 45 cord a year for farm house and cook stove plus more for sugar shack and did it all without chainsaw or hydraulics! but if he saw a tree was damaged he would cut 2 inches deep in a circle a couple feet long of on trun and debark it... this prevented new moisture from going up and allowed tree to dry standing.. umm VT farmers had to make hay and food in summer.. if ya want to try it..

 

I hear tell Eric VW girdles too....or was it that he wears girdles....hmmm.

 

No, he has a griddle that he uses wearing his girdle.

One of those days that I was busy all day, but didn't seem to get much done.

Got the dogs out to the wood lot. Brought down the box elder branch and bucked up most of it. Got some split too.



Brought back some dirt to grade around the new fence. Barely made a dent in what we needed.

Framed up another section of fence and put up the remaining fence boards we had with the help of my bride.

Trying to get motivated to go mow the front office yard.

 

Change of plans. My bride went with me to drop off the trailer at the wood lot. While we were there I had here drive the Husky around.

Although she mows at our house, she has never driven a riding mower. I gave a few lessons and sent her on her way.



She had fun. I told her she looks good driving it...I wonder if I keep telling her that, maybe she will take over the mowing??

 

Dang, that is a pretty grain.
