Took a ride behind the blueberry fields down the road after work today to see if i could access any of the wood but most of the area is still pretty swampy. Then i noticed on the high ground that the farmer stacked up some sassafrass and a small white oak behind a big pile of gum. So i fired up the 359 and let her eat.

That's a decent size sassafras tree. Splits easy, smells good, drys quick and makes some of the best kindling.

I split a lot up for really small splits and kindling.

    Nice score for sure.

Fresh cut sass has a great smell. The stuff we got dried out really light, kinda like the balsa wood for hobby projects. Good kindling.

I usually leave the splits pretty big and just mix it in the stack, especially with a sass that size. But some of the smaller rounds ill set aside for kindling.

Don't worry nate, the snow's coming tonight ;) . We just had a brief warm up

That's about as large as sassafras gets around here. I love to cut it just so I can enjoy the scent.

Sassafras is one of the few trees growing around here that I haven't burnt. My neighbor has a real big one on the far side of his yard and there is a sapling that just made it above the vegetation stripping deer's reach growing on the property line next to my driveway.

What kind of stuff do ya turn with sassafrass? I don't think i've ever seen it used for turning before.

That's good to hear. It is difficult to find a large one around here.

Makes for nice bowls, I was introduced to it as "poor mans Oak" but I think it"s got a bit more shimmer to it than Oak.
