That would be western Kansas. Eastern and western Kansas are like two different worlds.

Looks like Harding County. Home to the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils in the world. They pushed down all the trees.

In my 45 years on this rock Ive never lived anywhere that the mountains werent right in front of me or on the close horizon. On the flip side Ive had people who leave where I live because they find the mountains to close and over powering, always looming above.... like they are being smothered so they themselves prefer the wide open spaces. I like to think of the mountains as a nice comforting blanket.

Some folks are difficult to understand. Don't like mountains? Actually I like the mountains but also see the beauty in that South Dakota picture. I especially love the north woods and never thought I'd like the south. Then we spend 5 winters in Arizona and loved it. Never thought I'd like Utah but I could easily live there and be happy. I always loved the areas with deep snow but as I age I find I could live without the snow. Perhaps our love for the land and the lay of the land does change over time. Best to enjoy what is in front of you...

Like driving through South Carolina on I95 and those dang South of the Boarder signs; how I grew to hate those signs. I do believe you could calculate your speed with them as I do think they were a mile apart.

I couldnt agree with you more. I can visit a place that I would never live in and enjoy it for what it is and enjoy my time there. There is a reason why my town has a population of 4000 people. I think if everyone else wanted to live here I would have to move on. I love visiting Vancouver and Calgary and enjoy what they have to offer but then Im happy to get back into the sticks when my time in these places is up.

I have to admit we tried living in town one time and absolutely hated it. I need some elbow room. But even if not in a town or city, I still would have a hard time living where houses just seem to be one after the other; spaced about like in town. Not for us! We live on 40+ acres and are on a dead end road with only 2 of us on this road. Nice! I could live in lots of places if there is elbow room and some privacy.

Erik B Glad you had a good time. Definitely one of the countries pretty spots!

With the major attractions all in the western portion of the state, it kinda ignores the rest of what goes on, no?

I'll bet you made some good time with the speed limits?

yooperdave I am driving a 2011 GMC Acadia and we had 4 people plus luggage and bucking a nice head wind on the way west. We kept the speed down to only 70 and at best we were getting around 18MPG. We were not in that big of a hurry to go faster and make it cost more.

Glad you had a nice safe trip!

I still attack it, though. I had one 18 wheeler pass me-so I tagged along. It was doing just a touch over 90! Yup, made some real good time till it was time for me to turn off onto I-86 and he kept going on I-80.

Stayed about 1/2 mile behind him. Just right.

SD is the only place I have been where I can drive the interstate all day long with no sense that I have moved at all by sunset.
